How to sedate my 70 lb. dog to change his bandage every 2 days.

Hello,

Thank-You for taking the time to read this..

How do I sedate my 70 lb. dog so I can change his bandage every 2 days.

I took him to the vet he has an open wound on his right side elbow for about 6 months or so. It started getting worst to where he started limping. I knew I didn't have the money to take him to the vet but I was now forced to. I'm sorry for waiting so long. I don't get paid much, I work 3 days a week and such a small budget. So with what little money I made I took my dog to the vet. The vet told me my dog needed surgery. The vet wanted $750. I asked if he'd help me out as far as letting me make a payment plan. He said ok but I had to give him $500 first before he'd do anything, I could make payments for the balance. I was so great full. I left my dog to have the surgery done and then a call later in the afternoon  from the vet and said he could not do the surgery because my dog had severe tissue damage. He charged me $350 to clean the wound and for the antibiotic's/med's. He said the bandages needs to be changed every 2 days or it will not heal. He also said there's a 50% chance it will not heal at all. I love my dog but I can't afford $100 every 2 days which leaves me to change the bandage myself. I thought what's so hard to change the bandages. Boy was I wrong. I had him on a very short lease. I then muzzled him (which I was afraid to do,) Then I had to put the cone around his neck...he didn't like that either. And when I attempted to cut away the bandages he starting flipping out, wiggling, pulling and tugging away and was like choking himself and somehow got out of it. (He pulled everything OFF) collar, cone and ran off the best he could and I cried because he wouldn't come back. He paused for a cause he tried to run and remembered "Oh that's right...my leg hurts) and I walked up to him, petted his head and scolded him and took the muzzle off and I cried cause I couldn't help him and he wouldn't let me help me nor can I take him back to the vet and I can imagine if they cut his leg off...OMG!!! He went straight to his dog house. I don't want to put him to sleep and I don't know my neighbors, I don't have family in this city...so it sucks. Any idea's you guys...Can you help me...I'm in Long Beach CA.

My dogs name is "Shaka"

Thank-you from me and Shaka

Hello, I'm very sorry to learn of Shaka's troubles :(

If I was in your situation, I would call the vet and tell them that you would like a prescription for a few weeks' worth of sedatives so that you can change the bandage yourself. Also that you would like bandaging material and ointments if needed. If the vet will not prescribe, I would see another vet. It seems a little suspicious to me that the vet didn't offer more help to you in managing your pet's injury at home.
