Via Vita!

Hello all! I was wondering if anyone here has had experience with Via Vita Midwifery School? I have been researching different midwifery schools/programs, and this is my favorite so far. Thanks!

i've never heard of this program, thanks for sharing. hopefully someone here has some feedback for you.

You are welcome, and thanks for commenting. I found it on the NARM website under other midwifery schools and programs. It looks like a nice program, and the price is low.

have you decided to go for it then? how hard will it be for you to find a preceptor?

I'm doing Via Vita now and I like it! I really love how easy it is to get in touch with Sharon Evans when you have questions. She's very accessible, that is the main reason I went with her program. I requested information from other schools and STILL haven't gotten a reply yet.

The course itself is awesome and thorough so far. The outline is easy to understand and very straightforward. I really like that most of the coursework has you researching topics on your own, I've retained a lot of information just from looking into different resources on a subject and taking a lot of notes along the way.

 

I'm hoping to complete Via Vita down the line, but I also plan to go to Maternidad La Luz next year for their 6 month program, and hopefully sign off on my Skills sets for Via Vita during an apprenticeship after that. If you have any other questions about Via Vita, I'm happy to answer!

 

I do recommend the program, you just have to be very self motivated. Having too much freedom can really work against you if you lack motivation to keep studying.

I am still trying to decide, but I am really thinking about signing up for this particular program. I am hoping that I will be able to find a preceptor. I definitely have options. There are three free standing birth centers ran by home birth midwives (one is ran by my midwife) within 45 minutes of me. I know there are a few more within my state, so I am truly blessed to live in an area with options.

I did noticed that with Sharon. I contacted her, and had a reply within 24 hours. It was actually Christmas Eve when she responded back to me. I have noticed with other schools it can take some time before getting a response.

Yes!   And she gives wonderful feedback on the modules.  

I started my mw education with another distance program and stopped a couple months later to do self-study.  The main reason I stopped was there was ZERO feedback on assignments.  I was getting more from my preceptor and my own studies than I was from the program I was paying for.  

 

The course is very thorough.  You will be able to get some of the work done before finding a preceptor, but you will have to find one.  There are skills modules that must be signed/submitted in order to complete the course.

Just a question for you based on what I saw on your signature. Are you using what you're learning at Via Vita to help "qualify" you as a monitrice, or did you do another program prior to this coursework. I'm curious as I'm also looking to work as a monitrice (then possibly midwifery) and am trying to decide between the Via Vita program and the BAI Monitrice program. 

 

Also, I agree on the response from Sharon. I have officially signed up yet, but loved that she got back to me so quickly on my questions. I also like that there is no limit on completing the program. I have a 2 yo and another due in March, so I'm going to need a lot of flexibility in whatever program I choose.

I decided to enroll last Fall to help reinforce what I learned during my self-study + apprenticeship in preparation for the NARM exam (which I am taking next month).  

 

Via Vita isn't a program for monitrice training.  It's for midwifery studies.  As you go along in your apprenticeship and learn basic mw skills (vitals, nml FHT patterns, palpation, etc) you are learning those skills used as a monitrice.

Thank you. I've started assisting with my current midwife, but not at a place where I'll be apprenticing with her. This gives me some good guidance. I have a medical background in orthopedics/emergency medicine, so some of the skills I've already acquired, which is nice. Thanks again.
