doing the opposite of what is asked

Ds is 5. Lately he has been doing the opposite of what he is told, 2 seconds after he is told to do or not to do something.

"Please put the chair down." (He was holding it over his head)
He puts it down
"Thank you, I was worried that thechair legs would bump the window "
He picks it back up and does it again!

Or
"Chairs are for sitting in "
He immediately stands back up.

Or
"Please pick up your car so grandma doesn't trip on it "
He instead shoves it across the room to grandma 's feet.


Its so annoying! Suggestions on how to handle this?

Subbing, b/c I'd like to know too! If my DH were responding, the answer would be, "Lots of yelling, lecturing, and timeouts," none of which actually work....
