U.S. 42nd in infant mortality?

Thread Starter
I'm trying to get this stat confirmed. This is what I found (thanks to Klothos) on the CIA website. Can anyone help me with this. Here's the CIA site:
http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications...r/2091rank.html

I'm writing a letter to the editor in response to a (good) article on lay midwifery in my state, so I need SOLID, substantiated facts.

Thanks!

Are you sure? I last read that we're 24th, still sucks.

Guess the 26+% c-section rate doesn't save as many babies as they'd like American mothers to believe.:

According to Dr. Thomas Strong's book Expecting Trouble: the Myth of Prenatal Care in America, we rank #23 in lowest infant mortality. (Sorry, I do not have the book in front of me to reference his sources, but I would hope your local library or some bookstore would have one in stock for you to confirm with.)

I just posted to the thread above about why there's a difference in rankings.

hmm. i was asking because i thought, maybe if it was a few years off from the CIA stats (which were taken from 2003) that may explain the discrepency... but that's not a significant enough amount of time IMO to account for such a big difference.

http://www.unhinderedliving.com/mortality.html

That link shows 1999 #s, US 28th in the world.

United States: 6.67 infant deaths per 1000 of population

I've read just recently that 27 other countries rank ahead of the US, so I'm thinking tanibani's #s are the most recent????

Pitiful, isn't it?

Hi,

I don't have time to dig out all my stuff, but I am almost positive I read that same statistic that you have, and I think I read it on babyreference.com
- which is a VERY well-documented site, IMO.
