Caught a small break today - called the electric company & begged for them to give me a few days more extension. I have until Wednesday now :) Going to the walk-in place that I've heard will pay even extra on your bill 1st thing Tuesday morning. Going to have to get up before the crack of dawn - they only see 6 people a day I've heard, and they open at 7:30 - but they are a nearly 2 hour bus ride across town from us. But it's worth it if they pay the bill & maybe even this months bill too. Then maybe I could finally catch up & maybe even get ahead a little.
I hate to say this, but I know other mamas in this thread at likely on SNAP & WIC and need to know this too. When I called the food bank today to try to find someplace to go for help with the bill, the worker & I had a nice chat about living poor & trying to get by on very low income. She wanted me to know, and to pass the word to others, that IF the government shutdown continues through October & into November, it is VERY LIKELY that there will NOT be SNAP, TANF, or WIC for November or until the government gets their act together and quits acting like 2 year olds. She did not know if there would be medicaid either but said she wouldn't count on it. According to her, most states have just enough funds to last through the end of October and a few into the 1st week of November for SNAP & WIC, but beyond that unless the government does something we're out of luck. She recommended trying to buy extras with SNAP this month just in case & to NOT leave benefits on the card if possible because they don't know 100% if the cards would function without program funding. Some stores in other states are already refusing to accept SNAP & WIC for fear of non-payment. She also recommended getting food boxes NOW if you are someone who is normally borderline on making it with SNAP &/or WIC to avoid long lines & possible shortages. I thought maybe she was exaggerating, but I did find some google articles saying exactly the same thing so I think there is some truth in it.
We can get by at least a month without SNAP, maybe 2-3 months if we really need to. Going to try to do a full pantry & freezer inventory as soon as I get done with this bill mess & then stock up on things we need to flesh out meals.
~Extension on the electic bill
~dd who is coping with all this so well & being so good. Need to do something special with her once this is over.
~Ebay & selling on eBay. Should bring in enough this month to help pay the bills & possibly extra if the auctions do good. I've semi-specialized in scouting stuff - it's an area I know well & sells well.
~food in the house, a home to live in & clothing to wear.
