Dready Mamas 2013 - Page 2

I'm finally joining you! Just dreaded my hair after YEARS of wanting to. I have a straight job so I went the straight route - had them back combed/ crocheted at a salon. The are looking so good and I love them! I'm spending a fair amount of time on maintenance too - cant look too disheveled where I work. Consequently I think things are progressing nicely! Can't wait for true dread maturity! Wonder how much more length I'll lose? My undreaded hair was nipple length, and now they are past my shoulder-ish. Although length doesn't really bother me - I'm just happy to finally have dreads!

They look awesome! How old are they?

Trying to get a better pick (no headband) but my hair is so dark...

That's better!

Got them in on dec. 26. So 3 weeks? 4? I do a fair amount of maintaining though - palm rolling each one after shampooing with bronners 2x weekly. Takes about three hours each time. I do use a crochet hook to neaten them, but am gonna get a felting needle too. I think I've got like 40ish dreads - although two just merged in the back and good thing - they were each fairly wimpy.

I'm looking forward to them locking really tight so I can lighten up on the maintenance... But I committed to taking he time to get them really established. I'm trying to think of it like a hobby. And symbiotic...

Oh wow! They're wonderful, especially for their age! I don't know if I could devote 3 hours a session to mine. haha

MamaBookWorm - if you don't want the two dreads that joined to stay joined, and you can't rip them apart, I've just cut mine apart.  Or you can leave it so that it will be an upside-down Y later on (this is not my prefered option, but I must admit I have a few.)

Not the best picture of my dreads (since I was going for a belly shot - 31 wks) but here's how long mine are again (after a 6" trim this fall.)

Here are a couple of shots of the back of my head.  It's all just kind of a mess right now with a lot of loose hairs.

10 days of neglect! Should I be helping my hair section off so it starts doing it towards the top too?

Is it ever too early to start a sea salt or lemon spray?

I don't think the sea salt lemon spray now would hurt, just don't overdo it as it can dry out the scalp pretty quick.

scruffy too - I have had to take scissors to mine too. A couple tried to eat each other in the middle and couldn't decide on a winner so I had to do something so they could at least move freely. No harm done as far as I can tell.

Oh I planned on avoiding it touching the scalp (too much). At least that's what I've read to do in several places. I just couldn't find out how early was too early to do it.

They're really coming along! :) They're separating into sections really well.

Looking good, Becky!

So I had a hairdresser friend help me with my dreads today and she noticed some major dandruff around my crown. She said it looked really bad almost more like cradle cap. I've noticed some light dandruff, but I also live in super dry air, so I wasn't too concerned. She of course told me to get a good cleaning shampoo but I don't want to use something with residue. I was thinking just rinse it with tea tree and water before I shampoo it next... Any advice? My friend was concerned about a yeast infection forming if I don't address the problem---- that's SO gross!

What if you used dawn dish soap? I'm not savvy on DEEP cleansing with dreads. I hope you can figure it out soon.

I've noticed a lot of dry scalp lately, too, and the cold dry air is definitely contribution! I've been trying to massage my scalp vigorously in the shower & I take flax seed oil/borage oil each winter to soften my skin. I've been slacking on this lately, though, but just today I vowed to step it up because the dryness is getting worse (scalp, feet & hands!). I wouldn't say mine is like cradle cap (not patchy) but lots of flakes when I scratch it!

Anyone else with this problem?

I think maybe I'm not washing my hair enough. I've only been doing it once a week but my mom suggested doing it more often since the dandruff is getting trapped under the dreads and getting all funky! I don't think it's cradle cap, after my own inspection, it's just white and super flaky. I have super sensitive skin, so I think winter just isn't agreeing with me plus this is my dreads first winter!

I think I need to take a page out of my daughter's book. I brushed her hair yesterday and she's ALREADY got dreadlock type knots in her hair! You know how she does it? She stands on her head! LOL

I do an ACV rinse and have been washing once a week. I have struggled with severe dandruff issues my whole life, but its not too bad ith this process. I've noticed that the advice for getting hair dry is to leave the dreads in a towel to soak up the excess moisture. I've found that doing this makes my dandruff worse. Drying witha hair dyer after the wash with bronners and acv rinse has been working well for me.

Happy Dreadiversary to me!

Unbelievable that it's been a year already. Maybe I'll do a little crocheting to celebrate. Lol! They are looking shabby lately with lots of loose hairs....probably from wearing hats in the cold & scratching my scalp from the dry skin. Ugh. But alas, I made it a year & we're going strong!
