Well my daughter has the name of a good looking old friend of my husband - think he may have been attracted to her back when they went to university together, but they were never involved(she had a BF), but I loved her name so much, I used it anyway and I honestly rarely think of that girl when I say the name now. It's my daughter's name in my mind. So, I think it is possible to get over negative association, but it depends.

Yeah, I wouldn't go for that name either. I'm sure you guys can come up with a compromise. Explain your feelings and try to agree to find something you are both happy with.

Romanian name? My DH is Romanian. I'm assuming if your DH wants a Romanian name so bad that maybe he is? This is the first time I've been pregnant on this board and run into Romanians or women with Romanian husbands. There's a Romanian woman in the July DDC too. I joined both DDCs since I'm due close to the beginning of the month so both months are during my potential due time for baby to come. Anyway. Neat. :)

Be are both romanians :)

Absolutely, we have to come up with a compromise about the name.

Well, I am a bit biased and will say that I LOVE Maya....... because that's our daughter's name, lol! But Mara is beautiful, too! I actually do like the name Georgiana, but Lacramioara.... how do you pronounce that??

How about "Well, we were going to call him/her (insert name of commenter here), but it reminds us of someone who makes thoughtless comments about baby names"  ? I'd likely never have the guts to say this in real life, but it might be good to think it lol.gif

Maya is a beauticul name, but it is SUPER crazy popular where I live right now. I like that Mara stems from Lacramioara, which is what we did - found hidden shorter names in a traditional/important one to us. I always think that teardrops are not always sad. I have shed tears at all of the most wonderful moments of my life (birth of my kids/wedding/etc...). I have a friend with a tear drop tattoo to remind her to cherish all the moments that bring such emotion to her life (sad and happy).

I think I would nix names with a poor connotation for us. I don't think they would likely ever even make our shortlist as they just wouldn't resonate for us. Luckily we pick names which no one else has so it makes it a non-issue for us.

MayasMama, I don`t know how to explain how to pronounce Lacramioara, in our language we just read the letters, nothning special.

Bearandotter, Maya is pretty popular here too.

Dayiscoming2006 I agree that traditional spelling is best—I didn’t give that full thought prior to using the “yn” with my boys.  I would think that your association could be delt with since it was distant enough and you loved the name.

Mayasmomma88 I really like Makeda and think it would be rare for anyone to question or know the meaning, so I say if you love it go for it!

Babysmurf I think Isla is beautiful and even ran it by my dh because I liked it so much!  I have no idea on a good comeback, but you are right, once baby is born comments subside so I guess the only sure fire way to avoid comments is to keep it secret.

Veggieviola I X the names with negative associations right away…being a teacher makes that quite a long list but I don’t want to look at my child and have a negative connotation with their name.

Littegreenlady what a weird situation!

Ulybda312 I really like Mara but  Lacramioara would be my least fav aside from the meaning it just seems like a big name—would you use a nickname?

We had our gender ultrasound on Monday and found out that after 3 boys we are having a girl!  I’m excited and relieved on a number of fronts, naming being one.  Unless we look at her and just can’t seem to call her Naomi then I believe it is the winner.  Our back up is Esther but I doubt that Naomi will be outranked and I did already order a personalized bag J Anyone else know gender?

Love your name choice and back up. I imagine Naomi will be sticking with a personalized bag and all, haha. I'm am very sure of our little girl's name. But, I can't share because I'm keeping anonymous. I will say it starts with E and is very uncommon. And so far, all people I have told love it.

We were going to keep our names a secret, but my sister got my husband to spill the girl name (surprisingly easily) so now they're out.  Our girl name is Juniper Hazel "June" "Junebug"  Hazel is my grandmothers name.  Our boy name is Maximillian "Max", and we haven't figured out a middle name yet (kind of want to go with a family name).  My husband has been calling the baby Juniper, so sure it's a girl...I don't have any strong feelings either way, we'll see.

I love Juniper! I considered it. My middle name is June, which I have always loved (and in my culture, June means "sweetheart", so it was always extra special to me) - so our daughter is going to be Layla June. I'm in love with her name already. stillheart.gif She gets her own unique name that honors her culture, shares mama's middle name and share's daddy's last name. Perfect!

I know a little boy Juniper, and I think it's a very lovely name!

We came up with a girl's name that we both loved right away, but since we found out we're having a boy, we've been creating a list of possible names that just keeps getting longer and longer. We're looking for Hebrew/Israeli names, but not too biblical, more secular, so we've been coming across some interesting and pretty unusual ones:

Shai

Tomer

Ronen

Erez

Omer

Tal

Raviv

Aryeh

Mica

Amir

Natan

Nadav

Dov

Lev

This week we're both leaning towards Shai, but I feel like the favorite changes every few days! I'm hoping that somehow, at some point, we'll just know which one is the right one...

I think Shai and Mica sound good at least in my mind, I'm probably pronouncing it a little off in my head, but I can't imagine a bad sounding version of those. :)

Weve chosen Shai (pronounced shey) as a middle name if it is a boy! smile.gif

Top secular baby names in Israel right now are Noam, Itai, Ori/Uri, Ariel.  All of your choices are lovely, though I am particularly fond of Erez and its meaning, Cedar.  Another tree name is Oren, which means pine tree.  But I doubt you need more suggestions with such a substantial list!  We picked a name that is derived from Natan, so of course I am partial to that.  I don't think you can go wrong.

Love them all, epecually Oren.

Thanks, everyone, for the replies! It's nice to hear what other names resonate with everyone!

well before we knew the baby's sex for a girl Yolinan (Yoli= Yolanda Nan=nancy) named after maternal and paternal grandmothers.

Boy Jaén Luis  :-)
