Help me convince dh to get rid of microwave

I want to get rid of the microwave--it's too big for our tiny kitchen and I am feeling increasingly uncomfortable with its potential harmful effects. But, it is a major convienience and one that dh uses to prepare almost all of his food when I don't cook. He's a pretty reasonable guy, but is addicted to facts and logic. Where can I start doing my research to support my argument for removing the micro?
Sorry this post isn't well written--I'm pumping and only have one hand and 5 minutes!

Try showing him the difference in the electrical bill. Our microwave died, so we had no choice in the matter. We've never really looked back : )

Hope this helps!

What about moving it to the garage?

Show him how a toaster oven can do almost everything a microwave can.

Thanks for all these tips--I never thought about the electric bill angle--though that will convince me more than dh (I can't get him to turn off the computer every night!). The garage might be where it goes. . .
I laughed at the idea of dh trying to warm his coffee in the toaster oven .
Anybody have any information on microwaves changing eth molecular structure of food? I started getting suspicious when I read that heating breastmilk in the microwave kills something in the milk (I'm so fuzzy this week, forgive me for sounding dumb). After that, I read in a cookbook I have, Nourishing Traditions that microwaves change the molecular structure of the food thus and mimic a precancerous state in the body!? It is only a small blurb and I want to find out more. . .

as long as he turns off your monitor and you have an up to date system <they are very energy efficient> there really isn't any need to shut it off. we have our monitor shut off after time delay and we're always online <DSL>. that lil fan uses hardly any electricity.

Tell him if he ditches the microwave you promise to never make him shut off the pc. He probably doesn't know it uses very lil energy or else he'd prolly have used it in protest. So he will prolly think he's getting a bargain!

There was a thread earlier on Micro-waves.

The micro waves themselves are at the resonating frequency of H2O. Thus energy is imparted to the water molecules in the food, and this increase in energy is heat.

Really no different from conventional cooking, except that the heat is put there quickly efficiently, and in some cases too localised and intense (cheap ovens). This excess will change the molecular structure of all protiens, just as it does with conventional cooking, but faster.

Hope this helps.

That's very helpful! Thanks. Why, then, the caution against reheating breastmilk in the microwave? The caution was specifically about the use of a microwave to reheat breadtmilk dimishing the quality of the milk in some way, as opposed to reheating breastmilk in a bowl of warm water.

possible reheating only refrigerated milk by micro kills the antibodies and live culturesin the milk? There are live things in the milk that until frozen benefit baby. Maybe that is why?

Dr. Weil might have something about microwaves on his web site (www.drweil.com), but I don't know for sure. I did read that he believes it's not a (nutritionally) good idea to COOK food in a microwave, but that it's ok to WARM something up in a microwave.

Wish I had the quote in front of me. Sorry. But, I hope this helps.

Localised pockets of intense heat over-cook the milk. The protien molecules are broken down, (and that is why boiled milk tastes different to warmed milk), and possibly other nutrients too.

This is all very helpful! But, now I'm not sure I want to get rid of the microwave .
I will check out that website--thanks for the link!
