Sorry, everyone, for neglecting the group. After a second, very unwanted c/s I wasn't in the right frame of mind to write a birth story.
However, I am delighted by the arrival of Isla Willow on the 17th of November, weighing 4460g (9lb 13oz).
The day before she was born (Friday) I noticed that she had stopped moving. I tried all the usual things but nothing worked. I checked her heartbeat with my stethoscope a few times so I knew she was still ticking along but I couldn't get her move. I spoke to the midwives in the birth suite and we went in for a CTG at about 5pm. The trace looked like a typical sleep trace but went on much longer than a typical sleep phase.
We decided to do a c/s that night as her head was still floating and my cervix was long and closed despite nightly attempts at strip and stretching by me, weekly attempts by the clinic staff from 38 weeks and two sessions of accupuncture. By this stage I was 41+2. Unfortunately the Theatres were really busy that night. At about 10pm we were told that we could still have her that night but it wouldn't be til after midnight and she wouldn't be able to go with me to Recovery due to lack of staff. The alternative was to stay on the monitor overnight and go to Theatre first thing the next morning. We chose that option and DH went home to have a sleep.
She had a brief period of activity at about 1am but stopped again. Her baseline heart rate started to rise as well and I had some IV fluids in case it was due to dehydration. By 7am her trace was worse, she had lost most of her variability. I was just about to call someone when the midwife-in-charge came in and said she was going to organise Theatre straight away as she wasn't happy with the trace.
We went straight down and she was born just before 8:30am. Great Apgars but old blood in her amniotic fluid and a cord pH at the lower end of normal. The obstetrician who delivered her thinks I had a silent placental abruption.
Unfortunately her first blood sugars were very low, despite being breastfed immediately, so she ended up in the special care nursery having IV Dextrose for the first 48hrs. She came to me for all feeds and the nurse looking after her the second day was much more relaxed about her staying with me all the time.
Since that rather rocky start though, she hasn't looked back. She was 8 weeks old yesterday and has gained over 2kg(4.5lb) since birth. She's mostly a very laidback little person and we love having her in the family.
