The truth about Sodium Laureth Sulfate? - Page 2

What my sister keeps telling me is that even though SLS is shown to be safe in the amounts present in one product, when we use a dozen things in one day that contain it, maybe we're getting more than is safe. This is the same sister who was astonished a month ago when I got rid of all my nail polish. I have been using the kiss my face pure olive oil soap instead of bosy wash and I like it better. It leaves my skin smoother than body wash. I still use shampoo.
I certainly see the point about "natural" and "chemical" though!

if y'all are interested in a report on soaps, shampoos, deodorants, toothpastes check out the environmental working group's site -- www.ewg.org. the report is at http://www.ewg.org/reports/skindeep/ . they have thorough rankings and ratings of everything and all the ingredients. i sorta try to avoid sls. i think it might be irritating to my mouth in toothpaste.

to the poster who was looking for a kids' toothpaste, my dd1 loves weleda's children's tooth gel. it's fluoride and SLS free.

No proof here, just offering a bit of personal experience. I have found that shampoos without SLS leaves my hair much fuller, thicker and healthier. That being said, I have been shampoo free for months now and my hair is even healthier still.

And my husband seems to have fewer canker sores when we stick with toothpaste which is SLS free. (Jason for us, Weleda for the kiddo!)

anyway, thats my input, for what its worth.

SLS MSDS

Natural? Not? doesn't matter. Unsafe to us so we don't use it.

Well if your shampoo is pure SLS, then I'd see the relevance of the MSDS to the decision-making process. Since NONE of them are pure SLS...

This could be done with any substance. I know there must be a MSDS for oxygen, and one for Vinegar. BTW I noticed acetic acid listed as a questionable ingredient at that EWG website. Know what acetic acid is? VINEGAR, which I use instead of bleach 99% of the time.

Oxygen under the wrong circumstances and in too high a concentration can be dangerous. I don't see anyone suggesting we stop breathing.

Actually I don't care what any given family decides to do regarding the use of whatever products. And if your experience is such that you know that using something with SLS is a problem, then by all means, avoid it! I do the same when I see ingredients that I know are a problem for me--like lanolin, wonderful natural lanolin that will make me itch and take my skin right off...yet there it is in some of the high-end "hypo-allergenic" natural soaps..:

Big peeve of mine is seeing the label "hypo-allergenic" on substances that I know very well ARE allergens, like Seventh Generation's Latex pillows. Cut me a break!!! and how stupid do they think we are?

But please make the decision based on fact and personal experience rather than fear mongering or hyperbole.
That's all I suggest.

of course vinegar is only 5%.

The main issue for us is that of necessity. It's necessary to kill germs on certain things, NOT necessary to have "lather" in shampoo. We don't needlessly expose ourselves to anything with the potential to be harmful (certainly wouldn't store oxygen tanks in our garage!). Since SLS/SLES don't contribute anything and CAN be harmful, they don't measure in the "worthwhile" scale.

I can buy that logic, Christine.

I did my first "no poo" wash today, lots of diluted acetic acid from apples to rinse...:LOL

We'll see how it goes.

Great post! Lots of interesting info . I didn't realize Tom's toothpaste has SLS! Eek! Guess I better switch to Jason's.

Meiri, you make some very excellent points here!
