success now about that birth certificate

I dont want a social security number but I want legal proof she is mine. I want a birth certificate that proves she exists but is not property of us gov. What now? Can I legally make one with witness signatures and a notary?

Good for you for not getting SSN. I asked about not getting one about a year ago when I was researching UC and got torn a new one on here. All I ever found out from my post back then is that you don't have to sign up for a SSN to have a BC, you can just do BC. Good luck!

On the birth certificate application in my state, it specifically asks if your information can be shared with the Social Security Administration.  If you say no, then no SSN is issued at that point.

Yeah but then you dont get money back from taxes or enroll them in college or anything right?

They can apply for a SSN later if they decide they want one for any reason. If you don't get them a BC then it is nearly impossible for them to get a SSN.

Birth Certificate procedures vary by state, what state do you live in? In most states you get a form to fill out, show proof of pregnancy and of birth (medical records usually, sometimes pics or statements from people), your ID, sometimes proof of where you live like a bill or 2, and bring it to the vital statistics office. Most vital stats dept's don't know they can even register an OOH birth and will shuffle you around a while, but they have one clerk who knows how to handle it. A legal birth certificate shows you have registered the birth with vital statistics, so you have to go through normal procedure with that. But usually SSN is an option with the registration or a separate process.

you're in Oregon?  O lands.  You can register the kid to vote and get them a drivers license without any documentation at all (legally no but they'll do it anyway, Oregon's secretary of state office is so unprofessional).  Go to the link  in that post above and then call the office in question.  I'll be surprised if it takes more than a week to get your BC in the mail.  Our first daughter was born in Oregon and she got an SSN without our permission, they hand out ID stuff like candy.

I'm in Oregon and was told we had to PURCHASE a birth certificate if we wanted one....  just FYI....  

My mom had to show mine when I was enrolled in school when we moved in 8th grade, I assume she did for kindergarten also.

Purchase???  That is weird!  We are in OR and I've just requested homebirth packets for my last two UC's and got the BC after filling out the form and mailing it back with a small fee for registration (and SS was just an option in the packet as well). Of course a copy of a BC that already exists does cost something though.

Birth certificates are different from birth registrations, they got confused about what you were asking for. Getting the birth certificate means a copy of the paperwork on file, Registering the birth means filing it. Individuals don't often do it, homebirths are uncommon, so they assume you don't mean registering when you inquire about it at first.

I'm under the impression that a BC is just to establish citizenship, the SSN is what makes them a "human resource" & is a separate file you can refuse. Any registering of paperwork involves a fee & I think always has.

interestingly, now with the new healthcare law, having a SSN means you hve to buy health insurance as well as pay SS taxes when you grow up.  :P
