Brewer Diet

Has anyone done this diet before? My midwife suggests it since I have had some problems with high BP in the past. Seems pretty simple mostly what I'm eating now except lots more protein.

I've researched it and thought about doing it until I got major aversions in the beginning of my pregnancy that haven't yet gone away. My research says it has good results for some and does nothing for others. I wouldn't go cramming in so much that you gain weight faster, but you can incorporate what works for you and of course up the protein.

I also get the creeping up blood pressure toward the end of pregnancy. My friend suggested making sure to take a good amount of fish oil because it can help lower blood pressure too. It worked for her husband. And keeping active is a great idea as well.

I tried the Brewer diet with my last pregnancy because it was what my midwives recommended as well. It was hard for me to eat all that protein. I simply did not want it. I try to be intuitive about eating what I am interested in, with as much variety as I can and with a few superfoods thrown in. One thing I like about the diet: salt to taste; drink to thirst instead of a "drink this amount per day" or "don't exceed x amount per day". I have been on extremely strict "healing" diets for years on end and they did nothing for my health. It wasn't until I started following a very basic nutritional framework and ate what I felt like that my health improved. So my advice is this: use the Brewer diet as a framework, remembering it was designed for malnourished women, and eat what you feel like and not stress about it.

I don't think I could eat that much.  I don't like much meat or eggs so it would be pretty hard for me!
