Weight gain so far? - Page 2

I'm about 8 1/2 weeks, and I think I've gained a few pounds, 5 or more probably. I don't have a scale, but my clothes are feeling a little tighter. I still fit everything, and I'm not showing yet- though I've had a little pooch belly since DS was born that just drives me CRAZY. I can suck in like my life depends on it, and do ab work till you could break your fist on my tummy, but it's still rounded and stick-outy. I'm definitely doing some kind of belly binding after this baby arrives!

Oh, and I totally agree that bad MS can contribute to weight gain, exactly as CookAMH described. I think I'm doing better this time around partly because the nausea isn't as bad as its been in the past. Of course, I don't get the severe vomiting kind of MS, thank goodness- I only actually vomit a couple of times each 1st trimester. Ewww, sorry- that was probably TMI.

jennyanydots what is belly binding?

Belly binding is the practice of wrapping your abdomen either in a cloth wrap or a girdle type garment to pull your organs back into place during the postpartum period. It's a traditional practice in some cultures, and many women report great success with getting their shape back more quickly by binding- plus, it is supposed to feel good to have the extra support. Last time around i tried using a wide maternity support band and it sucked- it wasnt wide enough to do the job,and it bunched up or rode up or down. Very uncomfortable, and i gave up after a week or two. this time I'll probably buy a postpartum girdle, but I'm not sure which one yet. I feel that if I'd used something more comfortable and better fitting I might have done a better job avoiding the dreaded mommy belly.

so i finally had my first exam last week, at 11 1/2 weeks. they weighed me there and apparently i haven't gained ANY weight during the first trimester!

i've read people "usually" gain 2-5lbs during the first trimester, so i guess it's nothing to worry about really. i tried to put on weight, i even eat more than usual whenever i'm not too sick to eat.. some days i feel like ALL i do is eat.

oh, well.. is the second trimester where you're supposed to put on the most weight? or does that happen in the third? first time mama-to-be here.. in case you couldn't tell. :P

15w tomorrow and 9lbs gained.

I'm just over 15w and I think I have gained about 8. Much better trend than my other two pregnancies, for the better for me, I think. I am starting out at least 30lb higher than I would like.

i am almost 16 weeks and ive gained about 11 lbs. i am pretty disappointed to be behind Dr Barbara Luke's recommended weight gain for multiple pregnancy, but it's difficult to eat enough food. Bah.

I have lost 3 pounds since becoming pregnant, but I am overweight to begin with so I've read that is somewhat normal. I seem to have stopped losing weight this past week, so I am glad about that. The nurse practioner I've been seeing seems to think its fine, since I am eating mostly healthier food and that is likely a factor in the weight loss. I also started taking B6 and unisom to control the nausea, which was preventing me from eating enough at first. The baby is growing well and I feel good. But part of me is a little worried about weight gain--gaining enough vs. too much. It seems like a tricky balance especially being overweight to begin with.

I've gained almost ten pounds at just shy of 15 weeks (most of it between weeks 9 and 13).  I'm under 5'2" and started at 118 and change, so ten pounds is an awful lot on me.

I tried the "listen to your body" method of eating first trimester and it put me at WAY more gain than I needed, so I'm back to counting calories and servings of fruits and veggies like I did prepreg (with 285 calories added to my weight maintenance level -- will tinker as needed based on gain going forward).  That method may work for some folks, but apparently my internal regulator is dysfunctional (besides, it was telling me I needed to eat things like pasta and sweets).  Of course, that's nothing new.  I've never been able to keep weight off (despite eating primarily nutrient dense whole foods) without extreme diligence, so it stands to reason that I would gain very quickly without the same.

OceanSolitude: That has been my experience both last pregnancy and this pregnancy. I am overweight to start with as well. I lost weight for my whole first trimester last time (I forget how much) and as of 13 weeks this time around, I was down 3 lbs from 8 weeks and probably a few more pounds from where I started pre-pregnancy. I'm betting at my appt next week I'll have lost a bit more due to a bit of a GI bug I've had the past 3-4 days. Last pregnancy I didn't start gaining weight until end of second trimester/beginning of third trimester, and ended up gaining a total of about 20 lbs (9lbs of which was my DS). My theory is, I was already eating enough food to keep me overweight, so I was eating enough to support a pregnancy already. When i got pregnant I didn't really change the amount I was eating (and did cut out some of my less healthy choices) so it makes sense that I would lose weight for a while and not gain too much overall.

I am finally back to my preprgnancy weight (100lbs) - I lost 6lbs due to hyperemisis.  In my previous pregnancies, I have gained about 10lbs in the 1st trimester, so this is new for me!

The baby is DEFINITELY growing - my uterus is just above halfway between my pubic bone and bellybutton - he or she has a mansion; plus, I'm feeling more movement and it is easier to get heart tones!

Thanks livingSky, its good to hear I'm not alone. All this focus on weight gain is sorta stressful. I regard the BMI as crap because it fails to take into consideration composition. I weigh 40 pounds more than my mom who is almost exactly my same size... Despite feeling good and being generally happy with my body, Kaiser's usual reliance on it instead of my actual health is super annoying. I already had to do the glucol test only because of my weight...

OceanSolitude - remember that you always have the option to turn tests down. Last pregnancy I fought my midwife regarding the GD test because she wanted me to do it multiple times. We ended up agreeing that I would take the 3 hour test once around 28-29 weeks. I passed with flying colours. I will probably refuse it completely this time. That test made me SO sick and I just can't believe that fasting for 8 hours then drinking a disgustingly sugary drink that I would never touch otherwise is in my baby's best interest!

Yeah i know I could have refused it but figured I could try it once so they would bug me less. I managed not to puke until i was leaving then blessed a tree in the parking lot with that sugary drink...

I'm 16 weeks friday and last week at my 15 week appt I was up 4 pounds. I will only weigh at doctors appointments. I started out about 7 pounds higher with this pregnancy than with my first and I lost 6 pounds during the first trimester with my first. Zofran made my vomiting minimal so I actually ate this time around, hence the weight gain. I ended up gaining 35 pounds from my start weight with my first and I am hoping to stay under that this time.

vc2013, my midwife told me it's ok to not gain till 20 weeks. I told her I was worried about not putting on enough weight but she told me not to worry about it. Not sure where I am now, haven't stepped on the scale in a while.

i got weighed at the OB today and i'm up 12 lbs at 16 weeks. according to dr. luke's guidelines for multiples i should have gained 20 lbs by 20 weeks, so this should be interesting.

Started out overweight, lost 10 lbs (unintentionally) so far now at 13 weeks. I've stopped losing (I think) but haven't gained anything yet.  I'd like to aim for gaining 30 lbs or less, but don't feel too hyper about it.

mrsandmrs, It must be a somewhat odd shift to make to think about trying to gain lots of weight! If I were in your shoes, I'd be pounding butter, avocado, cream, peanut butter, ice cream and cheese. I get it, though.  No matter how hungry you might be, it takes a lot of calories to meet Dr. Luke's weight gain prescription!

Mrs&mrs both of my sisters had twins and I remember them struggling to gain what was recommended. It really is hard! And by the end they were both losing weight.

Minus 1 pound total at 16 weeks.  My first trimester is always rough.  With my other two I lost 7-10 lbs at first, then had decent weight gain from 4 months or so on.  One baby was 7.5 lbs and the other 8.5 lbs... so it was all good.  Hoping the lack of weight loss this time doesn't mean I am going to have a huge baby!
Oh, and I started out a very healthy weight each time, so that initial weight loss with the others was pretty alarming.
