removing scents from books?

Does anyone know of any way to remove cigarette smells from books?
I just got a book on ebay that smells like an ashtray :Puke

I'd love to be able to read through it, but it turns my stomach every time I open it.

I was thinking of sprinkling it with baking soda, but that seems like it would get real messy real fast......

I was going to suggest vinegar or wrap it in newspaper for awhile.

How about leaving it out on a sunny day? Prop it open with rocks and flip the pages a couple of times. I hate when I get smoky stuff

Okay, maybe that would be a bit overboard...
I'm jsut sad, because I was really looking forward to going through the book (it is for our homeschooling, which I need to start planning out for next year...)

I'll try the vinegar first--tonight.
If its still stinky in the morning, out in the sun it goes.

I think it will depend how long the book lived with a smoker. I inherited some books from my grandmother (lifelong smoker and lifelong reader) and the cigarette smell has persisted for 15 years, despite my best efforts! Hopefully your books aren't permeated like mine! Good luck!

I read somewhere that putting books in a box with crumpled newspapers would work.
