Who is feeling BLAH?!

I still think I am coming out of the woods w/morning sickness, but I had a really bad afternoon yesterday. Started off by going to McDonalds at lunch for small fries. I almost never eat fast food but my one occasional indulgence is fries - I have always loved them, as I am an Irish girl who loves her potatoes. Anyway, I then proceeded to the sandwich joint for an egg salad sandwich. Again, normally I eat wholesome homemade food but I figured egg salad at least has a lot of protein. Together I think this food had a lot of sodium and fats that I don't usually eat.

As the afternoon wore on, I felt sluggish and too full. When I got home from work I proceeded to collapse on living room rug; my sweet hubbie covered me with a blanket and I feel asleep for an hour. Woke up and threw up some of that lunch. Did not feel better as evening wore on. Slept OK but some bad dreams. Still feel off today but just did prenatal yoga which helped!

So... what gives? Have you guys noticed you feel instantly a lot worse if you eat bad food? Normally I can handle something like fries and a salty sandwich, but is my liver more taxed than usual? Do I really need to eat healthy 100% of the time to feel good? What is your experience with "bad" food?

Do you experience good days and bad days? When am I going to get my love for cooking and food back???! (I am 13.5 weeks.)

Maybe something in the egg salad was bad, like actually bad/expired? I know we went to a mexican place the other day for lunch and it tasted good, but about an hour later I was sick like a dog. What made me think it was something in the burrito was that my husband had an upset stomach that night as well.... Maybe our bodies detect when something is starting to spoil more easily and tries to get rid of it right away??

Both your kidneys and liver are more stressed in pregnancy and yes, processed foods are harder on them (not necessarily fatty foods). When I start feeling like my digestion is sluggish I start eating more probiotic foods and I also just reintroduced nettle/red raspberry leaf infusions to help support my uterus, liver and kidneys. Also realize that you DO need a lot of salt while pregnant and that in itself is not what made you feel bad.

I'm still feeling WAY more tired at 14+4 than I expected to at this point. My problem is that I really have a hard time getting to sleep for naps, so I have been wanting to go to bed at 7 or 8 pm! Looking forward to the fabled energy + libido of the 2nd trimester.....

My nausea is so much better but I still struggle with food. A lot of the time nothing seems appetizing and often if I satisfy a craving for fast food, I end up feeling worse. I sometimes feel terrible eating healthy, fresh, made from scratch food too (at my mom's house, I can't stomach much cooking yet). This pregnancy is more difficult so far than my first, hands down. Maybe I'm just older and in worse shape or maybe it's the not-quite-two-year-old I'm chasing around. I'm more tired than I was with DD. I'm more sensitive to food. I want to get to feel baby move around. Right now it just feels like I'm perpetually about to get sick. Toddler + newborn will be hard but toddler plus pregnancy isn't a picnic either!

I feel blah too.

When I am not pregnant, I generally start each day off with a fresh green smoothie but during the first trimester, I just couldn't stomach it AT.ALL. which made me feel pretty bad as it seems like it would be the most important time for excellent nutrition. I tried to eat as healthy as possible but I indulged in sweets and such. Since second trimester started, I am feeling considerably better but still get waves of nausea out of the blue and am still pretty tired. (very different from my experiences with my previous two pregnancies)

I've had fast food a few times this pregnancy already and it hasen't affected me differently then when I am not pregnant other then the food doesn't taste quite right but that applies to everything. Not just fast food. I am able to drink my green smoothies again but they aren't really appealing.....blah lol

I've been feeling like that a lot lately.  I'm convinced its what I'm eating.  I normally have a very healthy diet but I can hardly stomach anything even remotely healthy these days! :(

that's kind of the opposite with me, all I want is fresh food (except salt and vinegar chips and NoName brand popsicles), although I'm still feeling blah. Actually, My pregnancy so far has not been enjoyable.

Your replies are so reassuring! Since this is my first pregnancy, I have been feeling like I "should" be enjoying it more than I am. So so reassured to know others are feeling similarly.

I'd say the first trimester was hard. We did IVF to get pregnant, which was rigorous and taxing to begin with, then I dealt with a bunch of confusing health information from the IVF clinic about questionable beta HCGs and a possible twin pregnancy, which was stressful to say the least as well. Then I had awful mood swings and holiday stress in December! Emotionally I am now a lot better, but with the easing of emotional stress due to holidays being over came the food aversions and vomiting! It makes me laugh that my very first bout of vomiting was on Christmas night - just as holiday stress ended, came tummy troubles. :)

Rainbownurse, I'm with you, I am craving fresh foods like crazy! Especially things that are TOTALLY out of season like watermelon and blueberries and cherry tomatoes and cucumbers. I feel bad, too, because I'm a farmer and I'm active in the local/organic food movement. But I just don't WANT winter veggies right now. I still have the weirdest aversion to soup of any kind. The word "soup" still makes my stomach churn! :-/

Eilis, I know what you mean. I feel guilty that I'm not enjoying it more, too, especially because I was so gung-ho about trying asap and I wasn't even sure (based on parter's past) that we could conceive. I feel like I should not complain at all, but I'm just having a hard time coping with the lack of energy/sleepiness more than anything. Here's hoping that we all start feeling better soon :)

Same here, I've been buying blueberries, strawberries, and especially canteloupes.  Its really cheap right now (69 cents a lb) for some reason and so good!

Its funny, I have had a huge soup aversion too.  And we normally eat soup everyday for lunch!

Soup aversion here too and even at 16 weeks I have terrible issues with texture. I really like potatoes and brassicas right now. Maybe when spring hits I will have more of a desire for fresh foods.

I have not tried soup yet..... Maybe I'll wait :) I am happy to report I was able to cook a fresh homemade meal today without getting sick to my stomach and I actually enjoyed eating it! I am 14 weeks today, so maybe 14 is my magic number? :)

Okay, this is hilarious. I had no idea "soup aversion" was a real thing other than in my head! I am laughing so hard over here. It really makes me feel better to know I'm not the only one with this bizarre aversion ROTFLMAO.gif

How's this for a bizarre aversion... Ice tea? It started with my last pregnancy mid-way through. I had been drinking it quite a bit. One day, I got one that tasted so bad it literally made me shudder. I figured I had just gotten a bad batch. I tried again the next day when I was out somewhere else. Same thing happened. So, I made some the way I like it when I got home. Nope. Wasn't the tea, it was me. Never went away either. Just the thought of it makes me want to shudder. So weird. I drink plenty of hot tea with no problems. Who knows.

That's so strange!  I was like that with lasagna with my first pregnancy!  I still have a hard time with it...it used to be my favourite food!

And now that you said ice tea, I really want some.  But the Canadian way...you guys call it something different, I think?  When I was in Florida, I asked for ice tea...and it was literally cold tea...very strange! lol

What do you have for iced tea? lol, I think it is funny that you think getting cold tea when you ask for iced tea is strange! ROTFLMAO.gif

In Germany (where I am originally from) we have a mix... Its not really tea, but its cold and its a powder you mix with water..... its very sweet. no caffeine.

In Canada it's the same mix, it's called Sweet Tea in some of the southern states.
I had a couple weeks of feeling better, but this week the nausea and vomiting came back with a VENGEANCE!! I threw up four times today.

When I refer to ice tea, I mean just tea and water with a sweetener of your choice. Sweet tea is already sweetened and I believe originated in the south. Not sure what the difference between a sweet tea and a sweetened ice tea, but you can order both here (in Oregon).
