Night nursing every 45 minutes all night long!

My 6 month old still nurses every 45 minutes all night long. My three year old did this until he was 15 months when I night- weaned him. Three year old then nursed until he was two. I was pregnant and was advised to stop, I wish I hadn't tho and plan to child-lead wean with second son. Anyway, I am wondering about anyones experience that was similar to this. We think both boys are gifted if that makes a difference. I suppose I am just looking for support and some anecdotes that will make me feel a little less alone in this department. BTW we bed-share, my husband with the three year old and me with the baby. Thanks!

My first DD nursed constantly, day and night.  I will remember the sleep deprivation period for the rest of my life.  She was at times,  for very long periods,  nursing every 45 min,  waking to do this up to 15 times a night.  I tried everything from keeping her awake as long as possible during the day and nursing more to fill her up.  She always "tanked up" for 30 and 45 min. on each side during the day, so it wasn't a lack of nourishment.  It was habit.  I believe she is gifted as well, very talented and bright.  The only thing I could do was to wean her early or wait it out.  I waited it out for 2 1/2 years and finally  weaned her after her sister was born.  She was a constant nurser and night waking child, and eventually after being weaned she began having night terrors and sleepwalking issues which she still has at age 9.  When she does sleep it is good.  She is doing much better than I hoped.  Her sister also had similar issues with night nursing, but I figured at that point there would be no sleep for me until she was at least 2, which is when I weaned her.  Every child is different.  We co-slept as well.  Not sure I would do it all over again, because I was so tired that I became a mom who needed sleep to be a better mom.  What is a better mom?  A happier mom who is rested?  I've never heard of such a thing, especially if you breastfeed.  My friends who formula fed made me feel jealous of how energetic they were.  But, I couldn't get past my baby not having a mama's milk, so I persevered.  We all need to do the right thing based on what you feel is right.  Just know that I know how hard it is for you and that you WILL eventually get rest :)

both my kids nursed like that.  i dont have any advise because it took weaning them to get an improvement.  one note:  my son night weaned at 20 months and nigjt-woke until 3.  DD just weaned at almost-3 and her nightwaking hasnt been very bad.

I totally understand! I am a tired mom of a 10 month old. My DS nurses all night long. I think we are up every 30 minutes - 2 hours. At one point he stopped wanting to nurse much during the day. I finally have him nursing well during the day but it really hasn't changed our nighttime schedule. We co-sleep and I couldn't imagine getting through the nights any other way. It is so hard to hear my friends talk about their little ones who wake maybe once a night. I want to give my son what he needs but we are thinking about trying for baby number two in a couple of months and I can't imagine adding a newborn into the mix. I am committed to allowing my LO what he needs and I don't want to wean him before he is ready, but I am curious how other moms handle two at night.
