Strange odor and itchy penis

DS is 1 - lately whenever I take his diaper off he really scratches his penis and there is a strange odor - kind of like cheese crackers or something.  We have chickens and had an issue with fleas for a few days - I had some flea bites and noticed some on DS, including one on his penis, so I'm not sure if it's just the flea bite.  But that doesn't explain the smell...any ideas??

Is it really strong? I think some odor is normal, if it's mild and not unpleasant. It's also hard to say at that age if he is really itchy or just grabbing it out of curiosity. I would keep an eye on it and watch for signs of discomfort like redness, swelling or fussiness. In the meantime, I would give lots of air exposure and time without a diaper after a plain water bath with no soap. Plain water and airing out would help if it's just a little sweaty or a mild yeast overgrowth and soothing on the flea bite. Were you able to get rid of the fleas? They can be persistent.

Thanks for the response - the odor can be quite strong at times but other times it's barely noticeable.  He has become quite fascinated with his penis lately!  He has been pulling on it more strongly than he usually does which is what made me think it might be itchy.

Yes, I think we were able to get rid of the fleas.  I've not noticed any new bites on anyone in several days.

I'll try your advice on plain water baths and going diaperless.  It's very hot where we live so DS will love running around naked a little bit

Do NOT give up on flea treatment now. Pursue it for at least an additional 3 weeks. I speak from experience. You might think they're gone, and just when you stop flea treating, all of a sudden, FLEAS! When they were there the whole time still, just repopulating quietly. Sorry for interrupting your thread..just had to say that. G'luck with your son!
