Mattress is giving DH asthma issues...help please!!

So we got a new-to-us queen sized mattress from a lady on Freecycle who we were getting a bed for our son from (he is moving up from his crib-converted-to-toddler-bed to this twin bed w/trundle).

Anyway, our main concern was dust mites and bedbugs so we sprayed the mattress down with straight vinegar and covered it with a zip-on mattress cover that surrounds the whole mattress. Well, after three nights on the bed my husband's asthma has really flared up...and we think it is because the woman Febrezed the heck out of it before we picked it up!! Is there ANY way to get the smell out, or are we just gonna have to switch back to our old lumpy mattress (which we fortunately haven't gotten rid of yet). I just hate this cause our old mattress is lumpy and uncomfortable and like 14 years old. This one is fluffy and comfy and only 6 years old. But we HAVE to get rid of the yucky fake scent or DH is gonna be too sick to sleep on our bed!!

We switched to pretty much all natural cleaners for our home like five years ago (except for our citrus scented dishwasher tabs and All Free and Clear laundry detergent). I don't wear perfume anymore, DH doesn't use anti-perspirant (just simple deodorant from Trader Joe's). We have come to recognize the scent of vinegar as a sign the house is clean, versus the pine-sol scent our mothers used. We gag when we walk into freshly cleaned/air-freshened places because of the chemical floral scents. So this is rather frustrating!!

Can you put it outside in the sun for a while? Direct sun takes out odors like you wouldn't believe!

Did she spray it because of mildew?  Mattresses are a common source of mildew in the house.  It can be present without seeing black spots--it could be inside the mattress and no dust mite covers will stop it.

I think she was just trying to make it "smell pretty" cause she febrezed the two mattresses that were with the twin bed frame we got from her as well. It is the scent of the febreze that is setting off DH's asthma, I am sure. We just can't hardly deal with fake scents...it triggers our allergies and his asthma.
