Third trimester symptoms - Page 4

Ok all you heartburn sufferers, I just got back from seeing my midwife and apprentice. They had 2 recommendations for heartburn:

1. Don't drink your fluids with meals, but in between instead (this is pretty much opposite of what I have been doing)

2. Diglycerated Licorice root (DGL) - I have to find some and it may be expensive, but I am willing to try it.

I was wondering if coconut oil would work, I tried to find info on it but couldn't and I recently bought a gallon of it and it tastes so much better, thank you! S how long did it take before your family noticed e difference? I'm on day 4 I think, although today was cut short because I sneezed, it was terrible! I got the oil all over, I'll have to figure out how to avoid that one. I'm really hoping it works, fingers crossed. I'm with Loogiejane, I have genetically poor teeth and you faint to hear how much I have spent on my mouth in the last 5 years, here's to praying this is my solution.

Think anywhere I'd get a brazilian wax. Top, sides, everywhere. It feel like the muscles under the whole pube region are in such pain. When I mentioned it to my MW early on she turned to ligament pain. But I dunno....I feel like it's something more. Or something else. Stretching helps. And DH massaging helps too. But both things help only temporarily. Not sure what to do about it. Literally the idea of a long walk is dreadful to me. I don't want it to interfere with my homebirth and ability to birth as I choose.

This is exactly what mine feels like too. Although it definitely varies in intensity. I feel you. It sucks. My chiropractor recommended cat cow every day, the support belt thing, the pool, and sex with your legs closed. Hmm? That one still has me stumped. When its really bad and I feel like my labia are going to fall off I used a hot water bottle.
And definitely find a chiro, they are great. But those prices are insane, damn New York. In northern Cali I see a chiro that specializes in prenatal, first visit is $90 and each after is $45. She's giving me a major deal though for referring my moms to her. There must be seeming more reasonable

Times away, I asked to chiropractor about this and she didn't seem to think that was the problem, she actually mentioned that my body seems to be producing extra relaxin and it could be from that. I'm curious aboutthebspd but from what I've heard it's a separation of the pelvic bones and that the pain is much more severe and less of a muscle strain feeling. I'm not sure though?

Me too. Also no appetite and then nausea after dinner. I think it has to do with heartburn/reflux to some extent. It has me a little bit worried about weight gain, as I am only 11 lbs up at 25 weeks (BMI of 20.5 to start).

Yes! Me for sure. And also heartburn after supper. I am hoping for the opposite of you though, berrymama. I am up 30 lbs (I think) at 27 weeks and hopefully aversions and a little heratburn will slow down my weight gain. I think my BMI b4 pregnancy was 19.5.

As for heartburn or reflux or bad taste in the mouth cures my cousin-in-law told me back in the first tri to put water in my lemon and i scoffed at the idea because my heartburn was just nasty and I couldn't always keep down water but it is working now. I actually keep lemon and a chunk of ginger root in my water. The only down side is having to pee EVEN MORE than I already did.

I'm really interested in this oil pulling thing!  I don't know how I'd find 20 mins in the morning to do it, but I could try!  i am blessed to have healthy teeth, but I HATE flossing and never do it and rarely get my teeth cleaned because I hate going to the dentist.  So thankfully I am genetically blessed because up to this point I've been doing my mouth no favors.  So if I could do this instead my gums would love me.  And whiter teeth would be nice too.  I have been tempted to whiten a few times, but it just seems like it couldn't be good for your teeth, and I'm not giving up coffee or red wine any time soon!

ETA: Just did a bit of reading on the subject.  I found this article really interesting as it went into how the oil pulling works and has some recommendations at the end to make it even more effective (such as adding tea tree oil to the seasame or other oil).  It also explains why while the claims that the practise cures everything from headaches to "womens diseases" is to be met with skepticism, the idea that it does prevent periodontal disease makes good sense and can actually improve overall health as is often claimed.

I've been dealing with heartburn for a few months now (and burping, which was my biggest symptom in the frist tri) and chatted with my midwife about it at our last visit. She recommended:

 - having minimal water with meals as suggested

- trying papaya enzyme or other enzymes with or shortly after meals to help things break down faster. I've been using papaya but not religiously, I just take some if I feel bad. It seems to help a little

- Tums or other calcium based antacids are fine (and the only thing that can save me at 11pm when I can't sleep!

Is it safe to start oil pulling during pregnancy?

I tried it 2-3 times, probably 4 years ago. I tried both at night right before bed, and in the morning in the shower. It's crazy how the oil turns completely white when you spit it out.

I just gotta ask....you peeps REALLY keep that stuff in your mouths for TWENTY minutes? Twenty!? Don't your cheeks get tired!?

Haha, yes actually. I think it's a good face work out, and its already getting easier but my jaw was sore the first few times with the constant swishing. It is wild how it turns white.
My acupuncturist who specializes in prenatal health recommends it for pregnancy gingivitis although I haven't done personal research on it, I just took her word for it.

I would have trouble with not eating 2 hours before bed.  The evenings that I don't eat before bed, I wake up famished at 2 or 3am and can't get back to sleep without drinking a glass of milk.  Although, if the alternative were acid reflux, I might prefer to suffer through the hunger...

I haven't tried chiro yet, and a memory foam topper sounds like next in my line of purchases...

I have the same problem - if I don't eat near bedtime I wake up in the middle of the night starving. What I do is eat a high-protein dinner or a protein shake and that helps get me through the night. During my many wake-ups at night, I do feel hungry but I tell myself I'd rather that than acid reflux. I sometimes get up to have a glass of milk or cheese and crakcers. Definitely no sleeping in, ever, though. I made that mistake a few times and woke up shaking and starving for food.

I'll look into that, we have a pillow top mattress but overall the mattress is a bit old so maybe I need something softer. I had actually read that a firmer mattress might help, so I'm going to sleep on our guest bed tonight and see if it helps. Otherwise it sounds like some sort of topper is in my future. gah. The exhaustion of not sleeping enough is really starting to wear me thin, plus with the weight and size of the babies holding me back, I'm just always weary and run down....and I still have til end of April! ah!

I had really bad indigestion one day while at my parents for a family meal (I guess I don't know if it was indigestion or what, as we hadn't eaten yet and I hadn't eaten for a while, but I felt like I did when I was coming down with the flu really badly before Christmas).  Anyway, my sister's boyfriend's parents were over, and his mom suggested I try a shot of ACV.  It TOTALLY did the trick and I started feeling better within minutes.  Bonus that I always have ACV in the house.

Apparently ACV is alkaline in the body, so it must just act like tums or another antacid?

HO---LEE----SH*TCAKES I just did a shot of ACV!!! Never again!!! Gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh And this is a girl who likes her homeopathic remedies. Oh my god was that painful. Well I'm glad I tried it but holy crap...I'm still scarred. Omg I feel like it burned my throat! Ok...I'll stop my b*tching.

btw sorry for my total lack of ladylikeness. DH has affected me so.

Oof, now that it hurts for me to swallow I did some online "research". Dr. Oz (I know i know...it's Dr. Oz)  apparently loves ACV as a remedy for many things and recommends it for acid reflux *except* if you have an ulcer or esophagitis http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0002138/ which hi, if youve had bad acid reflux for a while and havent been checked out, how do you know if your esophagus is inflamed? And longterm reflux can lead to ulcers. Grrrr.

Well let this be a lesson to me and to listen to my bod...I've been thinking I've got more than just reflux and due to the pain I'm now in, maybe it's true.

I still haven't quite hit the third-trimester mark (which I'm considering as 26 weeks), and I really don't have any symptoms yet. Well, my sweet tooth finally came back, if that counts. But really I'm just enjoying feeling great and hope that it lasts as long as possible.

Interesting about not drinking with meals, but I can't do that myself. I am that person sitting at a restaurant tapping my foot when the waitress/waiter gets busy and doesn't get me refills immediately because I can't eat (except for maybe things like soup). I've only had to wake up and down some Tums once or twice, so it hasn't been too bad for me. I always take my last dose of calcium/mag/zinc pills about an hour before bed and I often have milk or cereal with milk or yogurt or ice cream as my before bed snack, so it hasn't been too bad. I have to have that last snack too or I will wake up and have to eat, silly twins!

The oil pulling sounds interesting, may have to try that sometime as I hate flossing because my teeth contacts are so tight (it's hard to get floss in there and when I do it usually jams into the gum from all the pulling I did to get it in, ouch). I'm lucky that I have good saliva/teeth/etc. and I don't mind going to the dentist so I can get away with it, but this sounds like a nice alternative to flossing to me!

Finally got a good nights sleep last night, feel much better today!

When I tried this, I was told to mix a tbsp of the ACV in a small amount of water, and drink about 30 minutes before meals. I was still yucky though.  I just ordered some of the DGL and papaya tablets. Also tried to not drink with dinner last night, and I still had the cough after but didn't have to run from the table with nausea. I will report back on the licorice and papaya.

Eek - sorry!!   I feel responsible :).  Yeah, but it never affected me in that way.  Definitely tasted bad, but no extended burning or pain.  Sounds like an ulcer or something more serious . . .

hahaha, i usually make it to fifteen. you can feel when the oil sort of changes texture. and it is weird when you spit it out it is all white! (if it's not white, it means you haven't swished it long enough). I'm not necessarily swishing fast the whole time, but I try to ... :) I'm used to it by now. Though I forgot to do it today ... LOL!

there's a ton of info online, some of the "it will cure everything from AIDS to cancer" variety (...) and some of it actually really good and interesting.

PS. Quinalla, oil pulling makes me feel better about my less-than-regular flossing habits :) And when I do remember to floss, there is never any bleeding, unlike before I started oil pulling.

Well I have to say though- I wasnt woken up once with reflux, which i have been every night otherwise. the fact it lasted me the entire night is pretty major. But it was too painful to do again plus it make me really nauseous. SO glad I didnt barf and was able to go to sleep (albeit after 2a.m because I was doing grad applications, ugh)

I think im just going to drink milk more often and i guess stick to Tums even though i feel sort of badly taking them
