We're not having a shower or anything for the babe before he/she's born and no one is buying (well if they are, at least not giving) us anything before then either because of our Jewish rooted traditions. I even found a free upholstered rocker+ottoman on Craigslist, got it, and now have it sitting in our bedroom and I feel kinda weird about it. I digress...
We will likely have something for after the babe is born though. Either a bris if it's a boy or a simchat bat for a girl. The bris happens 8 days after the birth and the simchat bat can happen whenever but I kind of like the idea of having it around the same amount of days after too.
My SIL keeps suggesting I make a registry but keep it private until babe is born at which point I make it public. So that way if there *are* people out there who ask if we registered then they can go off that list. I've told her that a registry just isnt my thing but then MIL chimed in to say it really is a good idea and there are people who will buy things off it. I *guess* they have a point. I mean, can't hurt. If I don't get the stuff then I don't get the stuff. Howeeever, Buybuybaby (where I'd prefer to have a registry in case we wound up with items to return I prefer to go there and BB&B...the Target here suuuuuucks) doesn't let you keep a registry private anymore and then make it public. The nerve. So I, in true fashion of LOVING being able to find a way to cheat the system, made a registry under a fake name! I'm very proud of myself, lol. Then when babe is born I'll put our real names on it.
So I guess I will give it a shot, have our gathering of family and friends and see if people buy stuff off it. I put a couple really expensive things on there which I assured SIL no one is going to buy me but she said you never know, people may decide to go in on a gift together. Still the registry feels weird. Sort of like, "here, give me things." But I did have registries for my wedding and I have to accept that baby registries aren't look at as too weird these days.
