Washing Flame Retardants out of a Car Seat - can you?

i am in a bit of a dilemma. i am currently using a Britax car seat from 2008 that i had with my first daughter. I know it has/had flame retardants in it, but i have washed the inserts multiple times since then. i know some of the manufacturers have moved to new 'less toxic' flame retardants - but i am wondering, would there be less flame retardant in an old car seat that has been washed than in a new one with better standards?

they're all treated with flame retardants - old and new alike. the best thing to do is to wash, wash, wash. my understanding is that many, many washes will eventually remove flame retardants. even more so if the item is sun-dried.
