Thanks for the info odinsmama! So sorry the afterpains are bad this time. I'll just hope for the best with tylenol I guess redface.gif

((hugs)) odinsmama! I had terrible afterpains with DS2, so we are expecting them again this time. My MW and I talked a lot about them at my appt yesterday.. I will be doing ibuprofin, tylenol, and she has this Chinese Herbal medicine that she gives too.. it is called Yammin or Yumman or something like that.... She also suggested heavy/hot heat on my uterus and said that helps a lot, so I made a nice, heavy rice sock to use. I'm really not looking forward to the afterpains either, but at least it means I will have my BABY!

a little tip from a midwife in a mothering.com article:

After birth pains

Calcium magnesium combination has been my friend since I gave birth to my 5th child. Although I had afterbirth care, no one knew what to do to relieve afterbirth pains. I suffered for days with the worst pain I have ever endured. I did some extensive research and discovered the benefits of calcium and magnesium. By the time I was ready to give birth to my 6th baby, I knew I wouldn't suffer anymore. I took 1000mg of calcium and 500mcg of magnesium as soon as the baby was born and I didn't feel the afterbirth pains. I was aware of the afterbirth uterine contractions yet experienced no pain. I took one to two tablets a day for 1 week.

going out to get this today!!!!  magnesium has been a saving grace this pregnancy, and this makes sense to me.  i need more anyways.  i do have a hot water bottle too... and will keep stalking for anything else herbal!  husband was saying i needed to get Motrin, but the Ibuprofen really doesn't work and makes me feel so crummy.....

I've been slacking on taking this a little, but for most of the pregnancy I've used this cal/mag supplement drink to help with leg cramps.

http://www.vitacost.com/natural-vitality-natural-calm-plus-calcium-organic-raspberry-lemon?csrc=GPF-PA-875534000938&ci_sku=875534000938&ci_gpa=pla&ci_kw={keyword}&gclid=CMDi9KDFn7UCFcpDMgodthMAnQ

It works pretty immediately on leg cramps, so I'll hope the same for afterpains! Still need to get to the pharmacy to look for something herbal, but we're on day 6 of kid illness so I'm still homebound :(.

I am trying everything too, I've always taken motrin but it really doesn't touch the pain.  I have "afterease" tincture, calc/mag, and hot rice packs and I'm just hoping the combo of these work, because afterpains are seriously more painful than labor contractions!

since i have no idea what i'll feel like/what to expect after birth, i'm holding off on getting anything. i already have my herbal preparations made for then, hopefully that will be enough.

had my 39 week appointment this morning and i haven't changed from over 2 weeks ago-2cm dilated 50% effaced. if i see another damn lara bar or date i'm going to throw it at someone.

You don't have to worry, with first time moms afterpains are mild or sometimes non-existent.  They get increasingly worse with each birth, for me #3 (last one), was the only time they were more painful than contractions.

when they offered me motrin after my 2nd, i sent them away not having any idea why i would need that.  i did not have any afterpains w/ my first.  10 minutes later i called that nurse back in and took that motrin.  but on my 3rd and 4th, motrin didn't help.  they were equal to contractions for me.  maybe worse, but since i was delivered of the baby, i didn't care!!!

i also have afterease tincture.  it was the one that sounded most important!

Kellybeth- i'll tell you honestly, i've eaten dates b/c i like them all of my pregnancies, i've had sex 3-5x a week at the end, walked 2 miles a day, drank RRL tea, lived in a 3rd floor apt and done the stairs 5x a day, eat spicy food every day b/c i just do, and all of my babies have come after their due date.  I'm sure I've tried more, but can honestly say that nothing changed how ready my body was (very ready from 37 weeks on) to labor except that baby deciding it was time to come out.  that said, while right now i don't believe i will ever give birth, all of my other ones did come out.... so i do somewhat believe this one will too!!!

i know she'll come out when she's ready, but only sleeping 2 hours every night has got me completely defeated. i feel like i won't have any energy for labor. it's the only thing i'm worried about.

I forgot one more thing I have for afterpains- Arnica oil and arnica tablets (I don't know how to take these, midwives had it on the list, I assume they'll give me the right amount!).

Thanks ladies! I've been taking cal mag and also arnica tabs. They are so bad this time. I'm totally trying a heating pad today. I'm actually feeling like the pains, while mainly in the uterus, are extending to my rectum at times and making the hemmies impossible to heal. I keep treating them but really feel like they won't go away until the uterus stops contracting. And I agree, for the first time moms you won't have to worry much at all about afterpains.

So sorry for all of you that are dealing with illness in your households!  DD1 came down with a high fever 3 days after Isla was born and the fever lasted 4 days and she seemed to be the sickest I've ever seen her (even took her to the doctor which we tend not to do!).  It was a very hard time for our household.  Hopefully all illnesses will be out of the way by the time your babies come!!

Buko - so sorry about what happened to you!  Very crappy to say the least.  Glad you made it home safely, though.

Hang in there everyone!  I think we're going to have a rapid baby boom suddenly in the next week or so and it's getting me excited!!

You all have me worried about after pains now!  this is #4 for me but i've never had anything more than very mild cramping that was totally under control with motrin..  nothing even close to comparable to labor! i hope i just don't really get them and not that i needed to have 4 babies to get to this part :P

then certainly praying for rest!  it's amazing what your body can do.  i also sleep between contractions during the more intense parts of labor.  it's crazy.

picked up the Loveandgarbage recommended cal/mag blend at whole foods just now- on sale for $18.99 or so!  so hoping that helps.

Also have arnica tabs in my 'birth drawer'!!!

feeling ready.... but unlikely.
