Why am I so hungry during PMS?

I do so well most of the month, but within the week before my period I could eat anything and everything. I crave not only sweets, but hearty meals. Is there a physiological reason for this?

Might be related to progesterone? That or estrogen. Both of those are produced in big quantities when early pregnant and women love eating then too! Of course right before your period is when progesterone drops- that is, a day or so before. Any more than that, and it is raised (two weeks or so before). Estrogen is made in bigger quantities closer to ovulation.

I sometimes think I crave food, especially carbs to counter the drop in my mood.

I understand it's your body's way of telling you need extra nutrients through your period. Calcium and potassium, I think, help with that.

Me too! I'm insanely hungry for the entire two weeks post-ovulation. It's terrible!

I know it's hormonal...but is there any way to counteract it? I mean, if I'm hungry, I need to EAT - but I eat way too much during PMS.

Me too - from ovulation until my period starts I am SO hungry. I lose and gain the same 5 pounds every month because of this

Extra nutrients I understand - but I crave more of everything, especially non-nutrients!: Taking a Bcomplex supplement helps me somewhat but not enough.

I was told by a medical friend of mine that your metabolism definitely increases prior to your period. I know that I completely pig out before my period. Now I don't stress about it that much with the increased metabolism info. Boy, I really hope that is actually the case.
