I'm so excited for him! I was told not to expect him to start reading until 6-7 because of his special needs but he wanted to learn so I've been teaching him..I was frustrated because he didn't grasp sounding it out so we took a break. Today I opened Microsoft Word and typed "CAT", "DOG", "PIG", "DAD" and "STOP". The only ones he had trouble with were pig and stop but he definitely got cat, dog and dad first try! He sounded them out and blended them together! I'm so proud!!

Yay! This is exciting! May I ask what worked for you?
I have a 4-year-old with autism, too. He's cognitively challenged, too, and I had been thinking he might never learn to read. He counts to 10 now and knows some colors, so I think he's more capable than I realized! I'd love to hear what has worked for you. Congrats!

Repetition mostly..for the longest time he would sound out the word and say the wrong one. ie. "C..a..t.....dentist!" Omg I was so frustrated. I also let him watch Leapfrog Word Factory and play reading games on starfall. He is still in the sounding out simple 3 letter words phase but progress is progress!
