Gentle parent-led weaning. Please share your tips, experience, and support...

Thread Starter

My 22 month old who was an all-day, all-night nurser for about a year prior to this has been really receptive to the "don't offer, don't refuse" parent-led weaning advice. For the month of January we did this as an experiment and I'm really happy with the result for both myself and my LO.

I am interested in a plan for a consistent path to weaning and would love to hear what steps you have taken following the "don't offer, don't refuse" method.  I'd also like to hear general tips for parent-led weaning.

I read on another thread, for instance, that there are herbs a mother can take to dry up her milk. I'm not sure that's something I would want to do but I had never even heard of that so that makes me wonder if I'm just really out of the loop when it comes to ideas for parent-led weaning.

So, all tips and ideas are appreciated.

Thanks, ICM

It seems to me that asking to nurse, sometimes, is asking for attention and affection. You might try offering something she really likes if she's asking to nurse and you think maybe she's just bored. (as in, you just nursed 10 minutes ago!) sometimes reading a book, or singing a favorite song, or playing a favorite game is enough to fill up that need without actually breastfeeding.

Good luck!
