Cervix question

Thread Starter

I have been having some cramping/discomfort in my pubic area/lower abdomen.  I've also had lots of clear mucus.  I looked around on google and both of these could be indications or preterm labor (or totally normal).  I felt my cervix and my fingertip fits in it.  It wasn't hard to find.  Is it normal for a fingertip to fit or does that mean there is possible dilation?  I'm only 16 weeks.

I am also having pain/pressure on my tailbone.  I have pain with standing or sitting.  It is especially painful to sit down (pain radiates to my cervix).

I asked my midwife yesterday about the cramping/mucus and she seemed to think everything was normal.   Any thoughts?  Thanks!

I'm sorry I can't answer all your questions, but I have a couple thoughts.  It is normal to have more vaginal discharge than normal at this point.  All the extra estrogen we are producing creates more moisture in the vagina.  I have been wearing a panty liner.  It seems to be normal as long as there is no blood.  Some of the discomfort you are feeling (in your tailbone, for example) could be normal discomfort due to pregnancy.  Things are moving around and expanding.  Round ligaments are stretching.  I have been going to a chiropractor who specializes in the Webster Technique which is especially for pregnant women.  I also had a prenatal massage.  These things along with yoga have made me a lot more comfortable and taken away some of the pains I was feeling in my lower back.  I hope you are feeling better soon.

I would call your midwife and tell her about your cervix.

Definitely ask your midwife about your cervix, but I have heard that the cervix gets kind of mushy during pregnancy. Out of curiosity I recently checked my own and kinda felt like I could fit my fingertip in, so I freaked out and asked my friend Google what was going on. I came across a lot of responses that suggested that the mushiness of the pregnant cervix can cause it to have a sort of divot that you could be feeling. However, the divot is more pronounced or common in women who have already experienced vaginal birth, so I'm not sure if that applies to you. (I'm on my phone, so I can't see signatures or anythinh) Did you actually INSERT your fingertip?

As for the discharge, that is pretty normal during pregnancy. I also suggest wearing a liner, but dont worry too much unless the discharge is pink or bloody.

yeahthat.gif  Often most midwives want to know this kind of thing. Even if "nothing" is "wrong" they like to know where you are emotionally and how to work with a mom and trusting the moms wisdom about their body. And if something is going on even better for her to know. My midwife tells me to call if I have concerns - just not to call overnight if it is something I think could wait.
