Endless stomach bug...

Hello!  My 2.5 dd is having her first round of the stomach bug.  She started throwing up one week ago, exactly.  She did the typical night of barfing, which then stopped by morning.  She then had some diarrhea and a few days of fever and feeling tired, etc where she just wanted to be held and sleep a lot.  And then she seemed to get her spunk back.  But puked a day later at night.  Then had a day of fever.  Then  a day of spunk back and then puke AGAIN.  I feel like I'm going to lose my mind!  Is this normal?  Do I need to get her in to the doc.?  I"m sort of hesitant b/c part of me thinks that this may just be a very sensitive stomach that I'm dealing with and I hate to drag her in and subject her to anything unneccessary.  On the other hand, I've never experienced this where the puking just keeps coming back.  Thankfully its usually just one big puke and then she's fine, although you can tell she's not herself.  Should I keep her off food for a full 24 hours and just do breastmilk and liquids?  

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

My doc has told me stomach bugs can last up to 10 days. Also if you are giving her fever reducers you are prolonging the bug. I would also limit food and focus on bland foods only in small amounts until its clear she is better. If it goes on longer than 2 weeks Id take her in and get checked out. Hope she feels better soon!

Do you think its a rotovirus? My DD had her first encounter with the rotovirus at age 2, and it was a lot like you are describing. It lasted for 2 weeks and the dairy intolerance associated with the rotovirus lasted for about 6 weeks. Anyway, if you think its a rotovirus, keep her off all cow's milk products, including yogurt, for at least 6 weeks.

Another thought:  Little Miss had a nasty stomach bug late last year, and although she weathered it nicely, I did some reading and discovered that the bugs that cause stomach unhappiness are especially well suited to surviving out in the open for days upon days upon days. 

So, every single last linen went into the garage and then through the washer on hot, floors vacuumed and mopped, toys bleached, counters bleached, it was an epic production.  I had (brave, brave) friends over within a day of cessation of vomiting, and no one caught a thing. 

I was unaware that stomach bugs are so hale and hearty outside their unhappy hosts.  Apparently, the usual wipe down might not be cutting it.

Some "regular" bugs can last two weeks! Rotavirus is one. It has a distinctive horrible smell but I'm not sure how to describe it. There is a nasty NoraVirus going around the US right now.

If you get something beyond 2 weeks I think it's worth looking at causes. This sounds like a viral stomach bug to me--just a long one!

one of my children got over  nasty case of what you are describing in two days. I supplemented her heavily with saccharomyces boulardi (google it) mixed in applesauce.   Works great for diarrhea.  I also gave her plain old acidophilus. Didn't bother with any child-specific blend as acidophilus has always done the trick for us.
