Easy to pedal trike for big kid?

DS will be 4 in a couple of months and hasn't mastered pedaling a tricycle.  He can almost get it on a couple we've tried at the store, but he's too big for the fold n go radio flyer we have at home.  I want to get him something he can succeed in pedaling so he will have more fun and I can stop breaking my back pushing him.  Any suggestions for a super easy to pedal trike for a bigger kid?  Has anyone has a schwinn roadster? I think if he could just get going he would have lots of fun. 

He doesn't have any success on the 12" bikes we've tried in the stores.  Just can't get the pedal motion on those and they feel tippy which scares him.  Also, balance bikes are out.  He has no interest in them and has never really played with ride on toys that take pushing with his feet.

Trikes are notoriously hard to pedal. I don't know how big your kid is, but mine out grew tricycles by 3 or so, none were really big enough for him.  The pedaling motion on a trike is much harder than a bike.  What about a different vehicle?  Like a scooter?  Scooters help kids with balance (which will help when he does want to learn to ride a bike), they are faster than walking, and easier to carry when the kid refuses to ride any longer.

A kettler w a push handle is the only thing I can think of...but I agree there might be other types of outdoor riding vehicles that might suit him better.

DS is 5 1/2 and still can't use his very nice kettler which is correctly adjusted for him. What really helped is to get him something that he felt comfortable (mastering a three wheeled mini kick scooter) with and he was willing to branch out. Lots of things didn't work including a balance bike. He still can't ride that trike but I've also read that I trike can be harder than a bike. My dad randomly bought him a bike and he can actually ride it. But not well. We are working on it.
