Can someone tell me how they can tell if placenta is shared or fused?

We found out Monday that we are having twins. Now I have sooooo much to figure out! smile.gif

The tech said she believed the twins would be considered Di/DI but there is only one placenta. he did not say anything about it being fused.

Can that be right or does that make them Mo/Di?

They can't necessarily tell if the placenta is fused until after birth unless they either saw two separate placentas close together before they saw one fused one or if they see that you are having a boy and a girl in which case they are DZ and have to be Di/Di (except in very rare circumstances) with a fused placenta. My guess is they will consider you Mono/Di with only one placenta until proven otherwise. Did they have separate sacs (that's the second Di in the X/Di)? Are they going to send you to get a higher level ultrasound to better determine placentas and sacs? My OB was 99% sure that there were two placentas & two sacs (sacs are easy to see early, placentas not always), but still sent me to a MFM with a better ultrasound machine to make the final call.

They have separate sacs. Those were measured for fluid levels.

when my twins were born their placentas were fused. They're b/g though so necessarily Di/Di. We didn't know the genders but I think the Dr. was not concerned as they knew the gender. We wanted a surprise!
