Our big dog isn't scary looking to us- but he scared a fox away one night and the neighbors told us about it! We don't always have him outside, since he is pretty much an inside dog, but we like to always have him out in the yard at dusk. That's when I hear a lot of chicken massacres happen!

My parents had a problem with rats around their coop for a while.  But, it's only because they had a woodpile right up against  the wire of the coop.  If the chickens get a chance to see rats or mice, they are ALL over them.  They like protein.  grossedout.gif

I really hope everyone gets the results they are waiting for ASAP. That has to be so stressful.

Heard a healthy heartbeat today at my first midwife prenatal!!! (I am about 13 weeks). This pregnancy hasn't seemed that real to me yet for some reason, maybe its because it's #3 or that we are taking such a laid back approach to prenatal care this time but hearing that HB was great today. The more I see these midwives the more I love them and praying praying praying I don't somehow risk out of a homebirth. They are so laid back, they love my kids and explain everything to them too (my DDs were utterly fascinated today, so cute!) and I love how they treat birth as a normal event and not an illness!

Unfortunately my energy still sucks. They even checked my iron but it was fine so I guess I am just extra tired this pregnancy. Really hoping for that 2nd trimester energy surge to kick in soon. I do think I need to eat more protein though. They told me about the Brewer's diet and it is all stuff we eat anyway, (and I have really been craving cheese and dairy) and I think I would like to give it a try. I don't have a history of precclampsia or anything but anything to keep me and baby healthy and on track for homebirth.

Is anyone else's nails growing like crazy?

Just checking in.  13 wk 6 days.  Have had two good appt w/MW at my current practice, heard HB this week (after a moment of searching, omg how i hate that!) Had a great initial u/s and just got my Maternity21 Test results back.  Negative for major chromosomal defects and 1:38500 for Downs.  I am really liking those odds.  Next step 18 week anatomy scan.

With all these appts though, I still have yet to contact our local birth center to do a meet and greet, so I can see if that is something I want to switch to.  I have to get on that!

Jillgayle- those are great results!! Your Down's odds are some of the best I've heard of. Is that because of your age, do you think?

Just catching up here again! I was out of town for 4 days for a family event.

Yay for healthy heartbeats! But I'm sorry to hear that some are still feeling sick greensad.gif A co-worker of mine's wife throws up the entire 9 months...I can't imagine.

I hit 15 weeks yesterday! I'm feeling pretty good overall. Sleeping better (except for bathroom trips) but still struggling with feeling tired a lot. I finally went to do the blood and urine tests my midwife ordered a few weeks ago...just regular prenatal stuff. It looks like my iron is low..."probable anemia"...so that might have something to do with the low energy! I'll see what she says when she gets the results (I get them online same day). I had to take a special iron supplement when pregnant with DD as well.

Crunchy mama, doesn't it feel great to find the right midwives? I love mine and feel such a boost after our appointments. And yes, my nails are growing like crazy too. Another (unreliable of course) reason I think I am having a girl. It was the same when I was pregnant with dd. crazy nails !!

Jill those ARE awesome numbers. Wow! At 1:10,000 after the NT scan, I thought mine were good. And I guess for my age they are. You must feel such a sense of relief! Did you find out the sex of the baby (sorry if you mentioned this already)?

I threw up all nine months with my first pregnancy and even I can't imagine. DH tells me I have a very short memory. Lol.

I don't know, if it was just my age I would be 1:385 (i'm 35 and we have no hx of downs in the family).  Genetic counselor said that with the negative results from the Maternity21 that is 99.6% correct, the numbers jump up.  I thought i wrote it down wrong too, but double checked with her and she repeated the same numbers.  I'll take it, even if i have an extra 0 on there :)

I had the option to find out the sex too with this test, but we are waiting to be surprised again.  We didn't find out with our first and it was so much fun!  I thought I was definitely having a girl until I delivered my wonderful, sweet little boy :)

So cool that you are waiting to find out baby's sex, Jill. This is our third, but it is the first time we have gone for the birth day surprise!!!

We're expecting our third, which was a total surprise, and I am not sure how my husband will react if it's a boy. He had a lot of issues with his father and is literally afraid to have a baby boy even though he is absolutely amazing with his stepson. Any ideas on how to quietly prep him for if it is a boy without being obvious?

Lady- Maybe hanging out together with some dads who have sons and dropping casual questions? Shouldn't be too hard if you're waiting for a surprise smile.gif

Saw the midwife today specifically to try and hear the HB. Fail. I am 13.5 today. She want to come over next Sat and try again. I will be 15wks. She thinks my placenta is in front, and along with some other possibilities, that may be making it more difficult. But she says she wont start to be concerned unless we can't hear it next weekend.

My kids are really disappointed we can't tell yet, but I'm just not the kind of person who wants to grieve with the world at large if I can avoid it!

My kids were at school & being watched by a friend today so I got to see the midwife and hear the heart beat (great V day present) in peace. Then quiet lunch at my favourite Japanese place with no kids.

For parenting boys generally I love It's a Boy!: Your Son's Development from Birth to Age 18 [Michael Thompson Ph.D., Teresa Barker]. You could get it for the parenting of the stepson and just happen to read the baby sections too. What is great about parenting is that it is one day at a time, and you don't have to have it all figured out.

Bean - I hope you find out your results soon.

Banana - I hate it when predators get my birds.  I lost my favorites to a Martin one year.  Sucks!

I've been adding more fat to my diet lately and it seems like I stay more satiated and I'm sleeping better, don't know if the sleeping better has to do with the fat, but I'll take what I can get.  Instead of eating just a piece of fruit I add cinnamon and a tablespoon of butter to an apple or banana.  Yum!!  I'm getting hungry now.  lol

My dh and I are looking at our choices for moving this May/June.  I'm hoping we can buy a house, but if not we may move into a rental that is closer to my dh's work.  I really hope we can buy the house that we want.  Then I wouldn't have to move for a long time, if ever again.  I have moved about 15-20 times since 1995 when I graduated high school.  I want this to be my last time. I can hope.

I found out yesterday that the MaterniT21 results came back with normal chromosomes and we're having a BOY! :-) We are so excited.

And Cathy- good idea on the fats. I could use some more fats in my diet lately, so thanks for the reminder!

Finally got on the phone with my insurance company and the Birth Center that I am thinking of switching to.  They do take my insurance and have an upcoming meet/greet next Saturday.  Already, so much more family friendly than my traditional OB practice.  Yay!  So excited to check the place out and meet the midwives.

Last nights early to bed became terrible indigestion s that became stomach flu. Couldn't keep anything in me all night. Husband guarded me and kept the kids away. Bee is at backup daycare and my village got monkey to school. He is big enough to be gentle and is snuggling me watching dinosaur train.

Thanks everyone for the positive thoughts, hugs, and prayers with the passing of my grandma.  I totally enjoyed the trip "home" to say goodbye.  I was able to go alone, the flights were better than I could have imagined (maybe I've conquered my fear of flying?), and I was able to visit will all my family without wrestling my kids. Couldn't have asked for more.

So fun to read everyone's updates!

Leigh hope that flu passes quick.  That's miserable!

I'm so glad the flights went well.  I really despise flying while pregnant.  So nice you were able to say goodbye and enjoy your family visit.

Me, I'm just laughing because my new endo nurses for managing my diabetes are so much friendlier, but because I'm mostly on the paleo diet they are concerned I'm not eating enough carbs.  I feel like I'm carbing it up with how much fruit I eat if my blood sugar is going low.  So now, for them, so they feel better I am testing for ketones in my urine for the rest of my pregnancy twice a week.  eyesroll.gif  I tested this am and low and behold everything is normal, oh and I have gained since Monday at my OB appt. and that is an indication that everything is fine.  lol.gif  I will do what I need to make them feel better.  They are super sweet though and were happy with my blood sugar numbers and they were perplexed that they didn't really need to change anything at the moment.  My last endo was that way too, just excited to have someone who actually follows their diet and recommendations and doesn't have highs all the time.  There must be some out of control carbing diabetics out there.  I couldn't imagine abusing my body more than I already have up until I was diagnosed.shrug.gif

Ugh, I have a cold of some kind.   Morning sickness and nasty green gunk from nose - I scare even me!
