Babywearing-advice

Thread Starter

I couldnt find the thread ( there was one) but i have just inherited a beko gemini carrier and a kari me wrap.. wondering what peoples experiences were of these, and generally what peoples advice was when it comes to baby wearing, especially a new born.. Im thinking of getting a ring sling.. but is 3 carriers a bit mad? and will i need one with these other 2.. the beko one being easy peasy to put on and the wrap being extra supportive..  im in the unusual situation where i will be babywearing in a sitting position most of the time due to wheelchairness...

What slings do you use.. which is best and why?

thought we could all use this thread to generally discuss baby wearing ..

You can never have too many carriers!  Kidding, sort of.  I love carriers, and i think it's nice to have different options at different ages.

Part of it also depends on what you and your baby are comfortable with.  I think the wrap will be really nice for the baby stage but a ring sling would probably be easier to get on and off and get baby in and out of.  You could probably do just fine with the two you have but if you want to try a ring sling and the funds aren't an issue then I would go for it!

Just saw the ktan modeled at a store and it looked really cool and overpriced. Two fabric loops and a skrunchy holding them together, I can make that. I asked a friend about it and just wanted the measurements but she insisted that I have hers. Uhm okay. Now I can make one if I want to or not. Great.

My Mom got me a K'tan, I think I'm going to like it. Sort of simulates a wrap, but it is so easy to put on. Also, good for holding two tiny babies!

I have a ktan and love it (it is so overpriced though!)...the only down side is that it can't really be adjusted for size very easily...

I had a ktan that they sent me free hoping I'd distribute them. The one they sent was too big. I also have a my baby nest which is similar. DH loved it and I did too for an easy stretchy great for newborns. It was comfy when sitting too! More so than the ssc

I have a Maya Wrap ring sling, but never could wear it comfortably, even with help from experienced baby wearers. My neck and back are bad, so I like baby's weight distributed a little more evenly across my back. I loved my woven wrap (a Didymos) and my mei tai. (a Baby Hawk). Both worked well for little babies and well into toddlerhood.

I do like my ring sling a lot for popping babies in and out and I think I'm going to dig my Mei Teis, I always wanted one last time, but DD wasn't too keen on carriers so I didn't get one.

Had to share! My Didymos wrap came in the mail today. orngbiggrin.gif My little man is helping to break it in so that it's nice and soft when his little brother gets here!

PBM, I didn't know you were supposed to do that!  A friend of mine posted a picture of her daughter laying in theirs like that the other day and I just thought it was odd.  Looks like he's having fun!

Can anyone comment on the baby ktan? I was thinking of getting one. Are they good for newborns? They're so expensive!

I had been planning on "making" a no-sew stretchy wrap like a Moby (aka buying 5m of jersey and cutting it in half), but I discovered fabric here is way more expensive than I anticipated and it wouldn't actually save money. My SIL might send me her old one - even if I have to pay customs (which ... I have no idea) it should be cheaper than buying new.

However, I also just found these instructions for a no-sew mei tai out of 2 yards of fleece, which I think I can swing and still have it be a good deal. Wanted to share in case anyone else is interested. I had always assumed that mei tais would require sewing, and I didn't bring a sewing machine.

If I end up trying this, I'll post my results!

Yup, woven wraps can be a bit stiff when you get them new, so people will make little hammocks out of them for their kids or "braid" them to help soften the fibers up. Maddox loves it! smile.gif He hopped right in again this morning and I had to explain that it was not a good idea to eat breakfast IN my brand new wrap! Haha!

I got one new for these babies, I think I'm going to like it but I agree it is overpriced. I got it as a gift, not sure I would have bought it myself!

Hehe, whoops, when I said it is so expensive I think I was thinking of the Ergo price because I just looked at my registry (and then went into the store to buy one) and was reminded the k'tan is $50. So it's the Ergo price tag that was in my head :P $50 isn't the worst, plus I used a coupon.

I thought initially to get a large, as my dress size (very much needing to lose weight) is 12/14 but more on the 14 side but I got a M because it really seems like the fabric could stretch since it's 100% cotton.

Thoughts?

I got the large, but I'm a size 16, sometimes 18 and I'm tall, so it seemed the best fit. Hard to tell for sure since I got it after I had a pretty big belly, but it seems like it will work for me. I do agree that it should stretch some for sure.

I feel like sizing down for the ktan was what I preferred for an optimal fit. I'm a bigger girl with big breasts and my normal size in the ktan was too big for a good fit.

I want to also get a ring sling. Nothing fancy, just something black and not too expensive. But still quality and 100% cotton. I found one that seems up my alley- very simple, but it's a single layer, not double (which they also sell, for extra support). Do any of you mamas with experience with ring slings know if that would make a difference? I wanted to use a ring sling at least for when baby is really little, up til a couple months and then play around with which carrier (I also have the Ktan and plan to get an Ergo) works best for us
