Jodene May is here!!

Some of you may have read that my midwives wanted me to come in for an induction last Wednesday the 6th because of symptoms of pre-eclampsia (elevated bp and protein in urine).

So we went in, Baby looked great, and my bp would stabilize if I stayed laying down. So we started cytotec, and kept going through the night. By Thursday evening I had finally made it to 3cm and 50%. Baby looked great still. We took the night off, I got permission to eat, (though I.d been sneaking food throughout the process) some benadryl to sleep and then we'd start pitocin first thing Friday morning. Throughout the process the nurses and midwives were so supportive and really amazing.

Friday am I had a cervical exam, and was back down to a stretchy 1, so they canceled the pitocin. I was so disappointed. We discussed options and decided to try and use more cytotec since we hadn't used all the doses up. After 1 dose was back to a 3 and 60% effaced. So we had dinner and started pitocin around 5PM Friday.

I was on pretty much constant monitoring, and baby kept looking great. My bp's rose when I stood or pretty much did anything but side lie, my swelling was increasing and so was the protein in my urine. However Id mostly have bp's of 130ish / 80 ish. Even still the clock was on. They agreed to continue as long as my bps didn.t go through the roof and baby looked good, which meant laying on my side through all the contractions. My doula and I discussed using an epidural to help keep bp low during contractions and pushing, because I really wanted to avoid mag sulfate.

So after 8hrs of pitocin contractions 2-3 minutes apart on my side I.asked to be checked. I was only a stretchy 3. So basically no progress. It was 1:30 am and I asked to have the pit turned off so I could rest and restart after a few hours sleep.

This was the only time I had a hard time. The midwife on call was insistent that we couldn.t stop and start. I insisted we had discussed it as long as baby and I looked good and we did. Finally I insisted she.turn it off AMA. So she did. I slept til 7 and we started up again. Then the same midwife came in insisting I take mag sulfate. my bps were labile but generally good, baby looked awesome. I insisted on getting labs done first, knowing she was going off shift soon.

The next midwife came in, we discusssed labs, the plan to do an epidural if I.couldn.t side lie or bp rose, and she checked me. I was 5cm, and she suggested breaking my water. I was already on the clock, so I agreed.

At 11:30 am she broke my water. The contractions were so much more intense. I had been using my hypnobabies, but it wasn't cutting it, so I tried a couple.standing, snd it was bearable, but my bp rose to 155/98, and I had to get back in bed. So 2hrs after she broke my water I asked.for an epidural. I was so.grateful to all the nurses and midwives. Even though my birth plan was pretty.much out the window they all read it and tried to follow what they could. I wore my own clothes until we broke my water, they'd wait to ask me things until a contraction was over, the midwife only checked me when I asked her to, so we tried to.salvage what we could.

My doula couldn.t be with us for much of this time due to the blizzard travel ban so the nurses helped my dh keep me as comfortable as possible. They never suggested epidural, waited for my request, and were awesome.

So around 2ish i got the epidural, and rested The back up doula arrived at around 5, and was.so good at helping dh and the nurses turn me side to side. The pitocin was increasing the swelling badly, but I had no idea. Baby looked good still, and I started feeling pressure at 7, so they checked and i was.fully dilated. We all agreed to let my body labor the baby down, so i hit the button for more meds since it had worn way off.

while we were laboring her little posterior head down her hr started rising and stayed a little elevated. So we started pushing when I felt pressure and pushed for 3 hours. I moved as much as I could even onto hands and knees and kneeling. Even with the epidural my bp wad rising way high and her hr was getting really high so we all agreed to a c section.

So at 12:44 am Sunday 2/10/13, Jodene May was born weighing 9 lbs 12oz 20.5 inches long. She is healthy as can be and we are in love. The doula was so awesome and helped me get her skin to skin and latched within an hour and a half. I was pretty numb and couldn't have managed without her.

So far she nurses well.

Thanks so much everyone. It was a looong loong process. We were exhausted, but I really feel like I handled it the best I could considering the circumstances. I thought I'd be much more disappointed than I was. I mean I definitely cried when the midwife suggested it's time to do the c-section, and I pushed with every contraction until I was numb again, just because it felt good to push, and because I was still hopeful  that I could budge her. The nurses and midwives that were there were all so supportive, aside from the one midwife. I think I was ok with the c section because I felt like we had exhausted all safe options and I wasn't being forced into it. No one tried to scare me, they just said here are the facts, this is what we think is the safest option. I could see that the baby wasn't doing well and I felt awful, I could feel my bp getting higher and my heart was racing, I could also see my urine from the catheter, and it was tea colored, so I knew that things weren't going well. The one thing I couldn't see was how swollen I was from all the fluids they were pushing. My legs, hips, and even back were totally swollen. Of course I do feel like the induction and all the pitocin and stress contributed to the need for a c-section, but as one midwife said.  You have pre-eclampsia, you could have a seizure or stroke at any point, or you may be able to make it to delivery and be fine without us intervening, we have no way of knowing who will be fine and who will not. So I made the choice to have the induction.

We struggled a little with the hospital about breastfeeding, they insisted on supplementation for her low blood sugar. I was so out of it from the surgery and coudn't move, we had just fed her and she latched well, then they came to feed her the formula and insisted on using a bottle instead of another method. Then they continued to check her sugars for a couple days, it did get low again (32) and they wanted to supplement, but we did only .5 oz using a syringe and teeny little tube. Then I just nursed and nursed trying to keep her blood sugars up. Finally they laid off when her blood sugar stabilized. Then the issue became she lost 9% of her body weight, and has some crystals in her urine and they wanted to supplement her, so the lactation consultant hooked us up with a breast pump and I nursed and pumped and used the syringe/tube to feed her. That night she had gained a little again, so they again laid off.

We got home on Thursday evening. It's been crazy and amazing and overwhelming, lol. Breast feeding is going well and we're cloth diapering and co sleeping and settling in.
