Thank you for sharing this article!  I was born and raised in Japan and I was diaper-less by one.  Everyone was toiled trained at 12-18 months at that time (about 30 years ago).  On the other hand, I wasn't quite comfortable going out with my son with underpants on until he was 20 months here in the United States.  Perhaps it's much easier when everyone does in in the community.  You get to observe and find support from other mothers.  It's great that early toilet training was found to contribute to effective bladder control!
