My 6th grade son started at a new middle school this year that specializes in foreign language. He had told me that he wasn't learning much in his Chinese class and that his teacher just gave them worksheets and showed them videos (in English) about Chinese culture. With no previous language experience, he had the choice of studying Chinese or Spanish. Most telling, he mentioned that when the assistant principal came in, the teacher became more engaged only to drop it when he left. I sent a brief e-mail to the principal and said I would be at the PTA meeting that night if she wanted to discuss it further. Well at the meeting, I brought up my feeling that the administration did not do the best job passing on information in general (a feeling that turned out was shared by others there). The principal got very defensive so when I talked to her after the meeting about the Chinese teacher, her hackles were already up. She basically implied that my son was lying! Because when she observes this teacher, she seems to be doing a great job. She told me I should observe the class although I had said this teacher acts differently when there is another adult in the room (and that I work an hour out of town and do not get paid time off). When I asked if my son could switch to Spanish next year, she said he could only be placed in the second year class, so basically he's stuck with this teacher wasting his time for 2 more years. BTW, he was given an A for his first semester of Chinese. I still can't believe she would just dismiss my concerns out of hand.
