Post Partum Meal

I am definitely eating a steak as rare as I can get it (I miss it so much) in the 24 hours after birth, but if my fave restaurant is closed when I give birth (most likely in the middle of the night), I need to have something else planned that will be delish and healthy and such.

Do you have any plans for an immediate postpartum meal?

Any suggestions for me? (FWIW, I do not have any special dietary needs aside from good nutrition and good taste! winky.gif)

For me, wine or beer-- something delicious!  I haven't completely restricted myself, but as I know I've mentioned, when the UK study came out that said up to 5 drinks/week didn't have an appreciable effect, I decided that 5 drinks/pregnancy (starting after the first tri) would be a good compromise for me.  I am up to 4 total (never more than 1/2 at a time) at 38w2d.  Being a 1-2 drink/day person (mostly a glass of wine or beer with dinner), I have missed it less than I thought, BUT I am looking forward to having a full drink, for sure.

That, and I live very close to a Jewish deli and, if it's open right after I deliver, will for sure be getting a sandwich they serve that has loads of pastrami and chopped liver in it (as well as their awesome matzoh ball soup).  I have eaten only minimal lunch meat during pregnancy, and only if super-heated... and super-heating chopped liver in the microwave is a kind of ridiculous idea (would change the texture, and I can't imagine the splatter), so I haven't had any at all in ~9 months.

Jalapeno chicken from the Chinese buffet we usually enjoy, as I can neither enjoy jalapenos nor Chinese, right now. CAN'T WAIT. Om nom nom.

Wahoo! I love food threads!! eat.gif That said, I can't think of anything special that I'd love to chow down on... I've not been plagued by any food aversions at all with this pregnancy, and I'm a vegetarian so there aren't a ton of off limits foods for me to avoid in the first place... Bleh, when I say it like that it kind of takes all the fun out of it!

I DO know that I'd love a nice drink. Celebratory champagne, or a glass of my favorite wine.

I've seen a few mamas mention making freezer-to-crockpot meals and this strikes me as an ingenious idea. I could plop something like this into the slow cooker when labor commences. Maybe some stew or chili or something...

Well, if I have the baby while my steak restaurant is open, I will order that right after!  No question!!!  lol.  And enjoy it with a glass of red wine.  I have completely abstained this entire pregnancy, so I am looking forward to it! :D

But, I am assuming that it will be closed.  :(  So, I am trying to come up with something that will tide me over until it opens!  And something that helps replace all that energy lost during labor!!!

A crockpot meal is a good idea... Pulled pork, maybe?

Eggs and bacon...

I've been obsessed with these steak burgers from is place down the road. They are sooooo juicy. With bacon and cheese. Mmmmm. But if they're not open I'll probably have a crockpot meal going or a casserole to throw in the oven.

Ooooh, Pulled pork would be amazing. I have a chicken pot pie in the freezer that at this point sounds perfect, but if it's daytime I may send someone to the local Thai place for a feast... I usually start out with a bagel and fruit and lots of juice- last time my favorite was a blueberry pomegranate. Love the food threads, LOL

I remember two births ago-exclaiming in between pushing contractions "OHHH that lasagna is going to taste so good in a few minutes!" The midwives laughed. And it did taste amazing! (We have a stairway from our bedroom down to the kitchen. We usually have the birth tub at the top of the stairs- good encouragement!)

Pulled pork would be super easy (and delicious) if you're going the home route. I love one from a blog that is just canned chipotle peppers in adobo, a can of coke or dr pepper, rough chopped onion, and pork butt. Cilantro slaw on top and in a bun. Insert orgasmic sounds here. And a beer.

Beer. That's probably what I'm most excited about. I'd abstained from eggs benedict, one of my favorite things ever, because I was a little paranoid and had originally thought of them as my "we're done" meal.. but I gave in the other day. DS demanded pancakes from the place that has my fav eggs benedict, and Google told me about salmonella and its incidence rate in the US.. and I almost literally inhaled it. I may have also put some red velvet pancakes in my mouth too. It was like a shark feeding frenzy but with a pregnant lady. So beer is the thing I haven't really had in this pregnancy. I almost think I was braver the first time around, doing my research, but since it took a while to get pregnant with this small person and I'd had the miscarriage.. I think my paranoia just made me err on the cautious side. Every time I go to whole foods and go down the beer aisle the singles stare me down. DH and I split a delicious IPA from Maui, but split isn't really the appropriate word because I think I had three sips.. but last time I went in they had Maui brewing "Baktun" beer and I think I'm just gonna buy it and pop it in the fridge. . so I'm prepared :P

+1 Buko on the daily beer or wine. It might not be much but I really enjoyed that before, my one beer at the end of the day.

And that concludes my story of love of and near abstinence from beer. :P

awww. beer. mmmm.

My husband brews some amazing beer- we are all out right now and I have been practically begging him to start a batch (or two) of the Oatmeal Stout. Since I am not "due" until the 25th and usually go about a week longer, he could finish it in time... LOL

My favorite bottled beer is Samuel Smith Organic Ale Perhaps a few of those would be nice in the fridge... :)

Beer and burgers will be my first choice if I give birth at an appropriate time of day... but otherwise - I dunno.  My doula said that she usually fixes a snack for the mom after the fuss has died down and we discussed what I'd want - probably some of my homemade canned soup, since we'll be in the hospital with access to a microwave... but there's also a Tim Horton's downstairs, and donuts might be good too.  Donuts and beer.  THAT could work.

eternalw - that's how I do my pulled pork, too, just how beautifulnm described.  It's the only thing I know how to do in a slow cooker - I just put the pork shoulder/butt in, add either coke or dr. pepper and some chipote spices and turn on low for 6 hours.  EASY.  Besides bacon, it's the only meat I cook (which means it's REALLY easy...)

I don't know what I'll eat after birth...  I haven't went without anything, so I'm not craving anything...  I've only had one glass of champagne, so probably a drink.  I know my MW will frown on it, but that's her problem, not mine.  Like some of you, I, pre-pregnant, was a drink-a-day type, but haven't missed it.  A gin and tonic would be nice, or a pina colada (I had virgin pina colada over Christmas, but the mix was freezer burnt and it was NOT good, nor satisfying), or a blueberry tea...  A blueberry tea during labor would probably be pretty good....  We'll see.

Once I'm allowed to eat I have to start with non-gassy foods. I'm hoping a mozzarella and tomato panini qualifies. Or something with lunch meat...

Glass or 2 of champagne for sure. Ive had some during pregnancy( tonight in fact), but its our tradition after baby arrives. For food I'm not sure. I've had so many food issues this pregnancy that I can't imagine what I will want.

I hadn't thought about food at all, but I made sure to brew a batch of beer to be ready in time. Still needs to be bottled, though. But depending on the time of day, I may go for a mimosa instead.

As far as food goes, I have NO IDEA what I'm going to want. We are surrounded by food carts and also have a trader joe's two minutes down the street, so I may just ask my sister or a friend to pick me up whatever I end up wanting. Unless it's the middle of the night, in which case I'll just have to settle for whatever we have.

We have a bottle of red wine sitting on the counter, waiting. Likely that will happen on day 2, but the beer comments are cracking me up. We have a local brewery nearby and I might just send Pete for a Growler of my favorite stout. Mmm.... That's good for milk production, too, right? ;)

After reading this thread earlier, I made white chicken chili for dinner tonight. For some reason that was what came to mind when I thought about what I want to eat after baby was born. I may have to freeze a portion of the leftovers just in case I still feel that way.

I have not abstained from much of anything, except my daily ration of wine! I have a bottle of red waiting, but I also want to get a decent champagne for our birthday celebration. I think I am going to make up a slow cooker recipe (although I am still up in the air as to what) when labor starts. As long as I have everything ready to just toss together, I think it should be doable.

I am thinking spicy bratwurst with saurkraut and a really good micro brew local craft beer called "The Baby Tree". MMMMmmmmmm...

I'm so glad you posted this! My mw asked me last week what my postpartum meal was going to be, and I just stared at her. I know that I want to do a crockpot meal, so maybe a beef stew or something. And wine -- definitely wine, but maybe I'll have a beer on hand to jump start that milk production. A woman at my baby shower was asking me about this. Can't hurt, right??

You just made me realize that DH bought a bunch of bottles of red wine recently and I may actually get to have some of them! joy.gif until now i was staring at them grumpily. Another thing I never knew last time was that chocolate can cause a fussy baby, and our DD ended up having reflux meaning chocolate was a no-no for a long time. I will be enjoying some pre-partum chocolate in the next weeks. smile.gif. That and milk...
