What is the brewer diet?

I don't eat sugar or anything white - no refined carbs. I keep fruit to a once a day thing and only eat whole foods. Is that close at all?

it is a high protein diet that is supposed to help with pre eclampsia

I was going to, and may later on, but I am far too sick to worry about it. Previously I ate very limited refined foods (like cold cereal, bread, and white pasta), with a generous amount of lowfat dairy, lean meats, and eggs, and LOTS of veggies. But I just want to eat what feels OK now. Which consists largely of granola bars, popsicles, ginger ale, mints, banana, and thin soups. I'd much prefer to be eating a healthy balanced diet, but when it came down to it, my choices were not being able to eat (and when I did, feeling worse) or eating whatever sounded ok, and feeling OK. It's definately a "listen to your body" time for me. But I AM going to get back to journaling everything I put into my mouth. I don't want to get out of habit.

I used the Brewer Diet for my first pg and plan to do it this time when I feel like eating again.... I too am in the midst of a period of listening to my body and eating very gentle foods very gently

Bradley method birth instructors recommend the Brewer diet. They have a food log sheet , "the pink sheet," that I found very useful during my last pg. I googled and found a copy of this on the web. Let me know if you'd like the URL.

I was reading over it and it seems like so much food! Isn't it hard to eat that much food, or are people generally kind of lax about consuming everything on the list every day?

Thanks so much for the sheet info...that will be super helpful. I am trying to eat really well...but like others on the list am having issues with the m/s and just eating in general...
I thought the high protein was supposed to help with the m/s though, does it?
I know it has for me. I tend to consume protein before anything else, especially when I'm having m/s, and it seems to work so far.

The only time I feel good right now is when I eat chicken...go figure. Must be the protein, but it is the only thing I *want* to eat. Anything else just makes me feel sick. Only 5 or 6 more WEEKS of this to go!! :LOL

Thanks for this! I learned about the diet late into my last pregnancy... and as I was already GD, I had a different diet to follow. I'm sort of trying to follow it... I figure with nursing & pregnancy... I need to try and eat the best I can.

I'm thinking about it.... Does anyone have experience with it already. BP? Weight gain?

ughhh... my midwives recommend this diet for all their patients. It's so hard for me to eat all this food every day! I'm putting forth a conscious effort to eat more protein, and the most I have been able to consume in a day is about 75 grams. what to do? I guess I could just eat cottage cheese by the pound, but that doesn't sound too appealing. Any suggestions for tasty and easy ways to pack in the protein?

protein shakes.... i mix protein powder with soy milk and fruits. 40 grams of protein in one glass

d'oh... why didn't I think of that? I laughed at dh when he asked me if I couldn't just get some protein pill. Thank you!

Just my FYI, but I followed the brewer diet last time and got an 11 lb baby (after 2 8lbers). My mw this time suggested that I not follow the quantities of the diet, just the proportions. kwim? lots of protein and veggies, etc, but not as much as they say. So when I want a snack, instead of pretzels, I have a piece of cheese, etc. I try to get more protein, but I don't think it's 100 grams a day.

By the way, my 11 lber was also 23" long, so he wasn't fat so much as big all over. This time I'm eating less (just to satisfy hunger and no more) plus my mw recommends a diabetic type diet the last eight weeks to avoid having another 10lb+ baby. I have to do some research on that....

PS The salt thing is very important...so many pg women are told to avoid salt, but without adequate salt, your body can't process fluids, so salt food to taste.

Just IMO.
