My 2 wk old BF daughter isn't gaining weight as quickly as our midwife would like, and after todays weigh in I was told that if she hasn't regained her birth weight by 3 wks,we have a mandatory pediatrician referral. She nurses very well, has a good latch and is on the breast for close to an hour at a time, every 3 hours during the day, every 4 at night. I've not been too concerned because she is healthy, has good muscle tone, is alert and active, etc. She has gained an ounce a day consistently since my milk came in on day 3. Birth weight was 7lb 4 oz, but she dropped to 6lb 7oz and I was told by both the MW and the maternity nurses that I had tons of saline given during labour, and that artificially inflated her birth weight, which would have been closer to 7 lb naturally (her weight today at 2 wks was 7lbs).
My question is to do with getting more fat into her - she's obviously getting lots of hind milk since she nurses forever, and I have lots of milk supply. Any advice? I'm starting to get pretty frustrated with all this intense focus on numbers when she is doing so well! The public health nurses and lactation consultants have said she is great, its just my MW who's getting antsy and I really am not interested in taking her to a dr when nothing is wrong!
