Mastering side lying nursing....how long?

How long did it take you and your baby to master side lying nursing?  With my first it was perfect, and guaranteed to get her to sleep.  With this baby....well, it's not working out as well as I would like.

For us it took much longer than everyone seemed to promise. I have quite large breasts to begin with and was promised that side-lying would be the ideal position for me & my little guy.

It's been great for a while now, but I'd say it was difficult until after two months (he's now almost 6 months).

Judging by your emoti-family it looks like your daughter is way beyond the two month range. Good luck!

Yeah, we had tongue tie and lip tie issues to deal with.  She got both clipped at one month, but the clicking and air swallowing continued for a while as she relearned nursing....and side lying nursing meant lots of burping and spitting up, so we held off on messing with it for a while.

She is now 6 months, almost 7, and we can do it, but it is not her preferred way of nursing.  I miss being able to lie down and nurse at night!!!

Mostly I was just generally interested in how long it takes folks, on average, to really get it mastered. :)

Oh gosh, DD was a toddler before I figured out how to really be comfortable side lying. I had a long stretch where I needed to be upright to get a good latch.

I think it took me a couple of months too with the first. Oh, but what a difference it made! With the second, it didn't really take any time at all.

I should add that it took until about 2 months with my first daughter. Had the large breast/ no head control issue. Once she had more head control we were set.

With DD1, it took months, DD2 about a month and now DS is 2.5 weeks and we have it down pretty well.  None of the kids were tongue or lip tied and were rather large when born (10 lbs, 9.5 lbs and just over 9 lbs).

I have large bubbies on an average frame, Little Miss had no latch problems and was a nice, fat 8lbs 3oz baby, she was 3 or maybe 4 months when we figured out side-lying.  What a discovery!  Very best of luck making that magic happen!

I was only able to nurse my last one, so I'm no expert.  But if you're just looking for consensus, lying on my side was one of the easiest ways to nurse and was never a problem.  Maybe it's just not going to be this baby's "thing".

I tried side lying a few times with DD, but we never could get the hang of it. She always had some trouble latching onto my right side (flat nipple), but I think the left side I might have gotten to work if I had stuck to it, but we found she (and we) slept better with her in her crib, so there wasn't much use for side lying nursing for us which is why I didn't really worry about it.

I would say about 3-4 months (?), my baby was 8 lbs 14 oz.. It was quite a challenge. I am small busted (larger with my milk supply) and it was definitely a skill that we both had to work on a bit.

Around 6-7 months until it started to work like it should.

My first DD wasn't able to do it until around 6 weeks, and it was frustrating to me because everyone I knew could do it younger! We were probably not very good at it until well past 2 months.

My second DD mastered it within a few hours after birth. I was shocked! And elated! I don't know if it's related, but she passes all the milestones early. Just turned 2 and she's off the charts in both physical & language & cognitive development. And she's a holy terror.

I don't remember exactly how long it took, but I know it took less time with my second.  More importantly, I remembered the secret key: start breastfeeding while sitting up in bed and THEN recline.  It made it so much easier!

With my first it took about 2 months to get really comfortable. I recall beginning to try at about 2 weeks. With my second I was nursing him lying down within hours. Now, at this point with him (& beginning at about 4 months old), I can only nurse him lying down. In the dark. With a fan on for white noise. So distractable! No complaints though, I much prefer this position. So much easier on the back, & relaxing.

I use it with DD as soon as I had her on her 6th day. We done it with no problem. Small boobie though.
