March 23

2whistle.gif DH stopped by the store because we forgot eggs.  Just some minor damage from being slightly above budget with our groceries again.  Came pretty close to our weekly target, though, I know a lot of places it could have been easy to bring it down-- we bought a lot of snack-y, expensive stuff.  If we hadn't had that awful first week, I'd be feeling much better about it.  We did $177 for the week, even better than last week.  We are going to miss our 4-week target, but next week will reveal by how much.  Still, since I've been keeping such careful records for our purchases, we are doing much, much better.

I was really close to blowing a lot of money today, but I didn't.  I had to turn my computer off for awhile.  Being one with the couch makes it WAY too easy to browse websites. I need to remember that I don't actually NEED anything right now.  I need to turn it off again, I think ;)

I know the month is almost over but I want to join.

I am a mother of one( 4 yrs old) and pregnant, due in July. I work part time at a montessori daycare/preschool and am trying to finish my DONA Doula certification before June.

My goal for this month/week is to not spend anything extra. My husband and I both usually budget 20 dollars a week each (sometimes more or less) to spend on ourselves for non-essentials. i.e coffee, lunch with a friend, clothes, crafts ect, However this month..... my husband started a new job and with the learning curve/ pay schedule things are really tight. I am sure this will get much better, he left his other job because it got so slow we started getting behind financially. We don't have any outstanding debt but we know we will have to pay taxes this year (made 70 dollars too much ugh!), will be having a baby (I wont be working for a while )  and we will still probably have to catch up on bills that we are currently only paying partially. We just need to get by.... paycheck to paycheck without getting too far behind.

So here is our plan. no eating out, no fancy coffee, and entertainment must be free. I'm thinking we will have to budget a little something just because it will probably get spent anyway. Maybe 10 bucks or so. So here it goes....... wish me luck,

p.s. there is a pair of pants at Target I really want so I told myself I can't go in there even for something I need, we will see how long that lasts.

Well, I held strong for about a day or so ;)  I've actually been thinking about buying this stuff for awhile now and I'm justifying it because these clothes last forever and will last a few years with my kids.  HA clothes have a wide size range and my kids are both at the smaller end, so all the stuff I just bought should theoretically last pretty long.  This focus on quality over quantity means that I shouldn't feel bad for spending a little bit more for well made things that will last a long time.  There.  Justified.  But still counting it as unplanned ;)

Well, I am having a wacky month.  We move in 8 days and I had a couple of things I bought to get ready, some planned, some not planned, all very useful and will help make the move an easier transition.  Of course, every time I use the word 'easy' or 'convenient' it costs me money.  If I was moving by myself, I could be very hard core, but I have 4 kids and two cats and a husband and we all have our needs.  Just trying to keep everyone mellow while we make this big transition.

But!  I am also making money!  I sold our second car this morning and someone is coming to buy our dining table tonight.  That is a nice chunk of cash just when I need it.  It is all going to savings and will help fund our down payment.

jammin.gif Finally another no-spend!  Our first full weekend home for weeks.  Nice.

Now, I know I am not going to make it through next week on just $35, but I am going to vow right now to not buy anything I don't absolutely need from the grocery stores.  Azure Standard delivery is Tuesday, but I've been careful to keep the orders even and I'm not buying things unless I am absolutely OUT.  Then, at least I can salvage the month.  Hopefully!

Stick to the $150 p/w without padding the food budget with bread and pasta.

Blew budget this week. Thanks to DP spending money on eating out twice! I think we spent almost $300 this week...eyesroll.gif

March 26

thumb.gif  Co-op stop, mainly snacks from the girls snack money.  We'll see if I can hit my weekly grocery target at least once this month!  If it wasn't for that first awful week, the numbers would look fairly good.

ETA:  Azure order came in today, $31 to apply to this week.

Had fun spending some of our REI dividend.  DD2 needed a new bike.  We could have cashed it in, but we always need something from there, be it shoes or backpacks or socks or bicycles or helmets or gloves or......  So, most years it gets spent.  Nice timing, because the weather is getting mild for riding bikes, and dd2 was on this teeny little thing.  Seeing her on this 16" just reinforces how tiny that other bike was!

Now that the end of the month is looming, I see that I've managed to put off some of the purchases that I thought I was going to need to make.  thumb.gif  Next month, though, I'd like to see fewer of those Thumb's Up Dudes (even though they aren't *bad*) and more Rockin' Dudes.

Key

thumb.gif  No Spend/ Budgeted Spending

irked.gif  Unbudgeted/ Unnecessary Spending

treehugger.gif  Did Something Frugal

1.  irked.gif  $28 at McD's for lunch treehugger.gif decluttered maternity clothes and baby clothes, passed along to DH's pregnant cousin

2.  thumb.gif  treehugger.gif winter sowed 2 containers of echinacea seeds, ILs visited overnight and treated our family to dinner

3.  thumb.gif  treehugger.gif  planted 52 onion sets in the garden, ate leftovers for lunch and dinner

4.  thumb.gif  treehugger.gif  all meals had at home, finished off the leftovers for lunch

5.  thumb.gif  treehugger.gif baked bread in prep for snow storm coming, but I didn't get the stew and additional bread done.  Planted rainbow chard seeds in garden.

6.  thumb.gif  treehugger.gif  Snow storm, lost power, cooked stew, rice, and bread on grill.  Kept warm using the woodstove.

7.  irked.gif  No power, hubby went to store for breakfast cereal.  Ran generator for fridges & freezer.  Picked up more oil lamps and an extra gas can at WalMart & spent $75 on wood for woodstove.

8.  irked.gif    treehugger.gif  Still no power, DD4 had a well baby visit, my mom watched the rest of the kids & washed the cloth dipes for me at her house.  Spent $75 @ Target for additional drying racks, oil for generator, ash can for the woodstove, mini- LED flashlights for the kids, and new toilet brushes.  Heated w/ woodstove.

9.  thumb.gif  treehugger.gif  Day 4 no power, hubby went to grocery store for hamburgers & hot dogs, my mom took my donations to the thrift store for me, acquired a set of fireplace gloves & fireplace tongs from my parents they no longer use, but proved quite handy for us.

10. irked.gif  treehugger.gif  Power was restored this morning!!!  Winter sowed sprouted tomato seeds.  Ended up ordering pizza for dinner.

11. thumb.gif  treehugger.gif  4 kids had dentist appts, all were cavity free orngbiggrin.gif  Had our American Heritage Girls Joining Ceremony, made gluten-free rice krispie treats, was given all of the leftover potato chips at the end of the night.

12. irked.gif  treehugger.gif  DH forgot his wallet at home & needed gas for his car.  Had to drive an hour (one way) to his office, kids and I had an unbudgeted McD lunch w/ him.  Prepped 2 loaves of bread to bake in the morning.

13. thumb.gif

14. thumb.gif  treehugger.gif  winter sowed 4 jugs today, chamomile, thyme, sage, and parsley

15. thumb.gif  treehugger.gif  hung 2 loads of laundry to dry, planted shelling peas, snow peas, and more onions.

16. irked.gif  treehugger.gif  overspent on grocery grocery budget, $9 on Starbucks coffee.  Hung 1 load of laundry to dry.

17. thumb.gif  treehugger.gif  budgeted spend on felt for DS1's birthday gift (a Cub Scout brag vest).  Hung 1 load of laundry

18. thumb.gif  treehugger.gif  budgeted spend on knitting patterns for DD3's birthday gifts.  Hung 1 load of laundry.

19. thumb.gif  treehugger.gif  DH bought my birthday present and surprisingly, stayed in budget.  Hung 1 load of laundry.

20. partytime.gif  My birthday orngbiggrin.gif  My kids gave me loads of homemade birthday cards all day long, DH bought me a pair of much needed sneakers, and we ordered delivery pizza for dinner followed by ice cream for the kiddos.  Also bought strawberry plants, and birthday presents for DS1 and my little brother, all budgeted.

21. thumb.gif  treehugger.gif  Not going anywhere today.  Budgeted spend on race registration for my first 5K in June, will be running it w/ DH love.gif.  Hung 1 load of laundry and baked 2 loaves of bread.

22. thumb.gif  treehugger.gif  Didn't go anywhere so we didn't spend anything.  Had the kids help me make seed tape for carrots, radishes, and parsnips.

23. irked.gif  treehugger.gif  Had a Cub Scout hot dog fundraiser, spent quite a bit on hot dogs for my kids, more than we wanted to because the family that had the shift after us were over an hour late and my kids were getting hungry.  At least it went towards our Cub Scout Pack costs shrug.gif  Hung 1 load of laundry

24. thumb.gif  treehugger.gif  Planted some of the seed tape we made the other day.  Got it in just before the rain and snow started, so I didn't need to water in the seeds thumb.gif

25. thumb.gif  treehugger.gif  Hung laundry, stayed home due to the snow.

26. irked.gif  treehugger.gif  Ordered dinner out, $41.  Hung 2 loads of laundry.
