nursing student looking for resources about educating moms in labor about pain management

hello everyone,

i'm a nursing student doing an independent study in labor and delivery in a very midwife centered hospital in brooklyn, ny.  having worked as a doula and had both hospital and homebirths myself, i've found it really interesting working with all different populations in this hospital with the amazing midwifery team there.

i'm looking for research about how nurses and other health care providers educate already laboring moms about pain management techniques - both pharmacological and non-pharmacological.  it seems to me that the non-pharm ones are relatively easy to educate and implement - since essentially, you can say to the mom, "tell me if this is working or not working for you."

when it comes to pharmacological pain relief, it's a lot more complicated - there's more pros and cons, maybe consent to sign, and often it's not easily reversible.  a lot of the women who come in from triage haven't had prenatal childbirth ed, and so it could be the first time that they're having a real discussion about pain medication.

if any of you know of any journals/books/etc that address pain mgmt education for an already laboring mom, i would greatly appreciate it if you sent them my way.

thanks so much for your help!

Here's a few links that may help.  They're not exactly what you were looking for, but they might work.  They are all from large healthcare systems.

I'm reading Ina May's Guide to Childbirth. I'm pregnant with baby #4 and was asking how to manage "pain" while in labor. It seems that everytime I get closer to delivery I get scared b/c I know what's coming. She has attended and watched thousands of births and her knowledge from that is incredible. She has witnessed things that slow birth, speed up birth, and make birth painfull and less painful. She has tons of good tips for an easier birth. I plan on trying some in my labor this time, and am no longer fearful of what's to come. I know the fear will only make it "hurt" more. I'm sure you can use some of these tips even in a hospital setting, though it is much better suited for home/birth center births where women can birth the way nature attended.

The Mother's Advocate series has short videos and handouts you can use:

Birthing from within had practices you can adapt to teach a mom quickly. Non. Focused awareness, some visualization, Quaker listening. Practice teaching mom in short, clear instructions between contractions. I just learned these at a workshop with Pam England.
