Yes indeed.  We were more worried about finding the right house, but with at least 10 acres and closer to work for dh.  If we get this place we will be 10 minutes from town for grocery shopping for me and 15 minutes for DH to get to work.  We are putting down an offer tomorrow.  So exciting!!!  It's a short sale so it can take anywhere from 2-3 months.  We want to try to get in there as soon as we can before I get too far along and can't do anything.  So exciting!!!   I hope they take the offer too.

I've been having this nagging cough for the last few weeks.  I think its from the dry air.  We have a humidifier in the living area and now have one in our bedroom, but I'm still coughing.  Most of the time its mucousy, at night its usually a dry cough and I haven't been coughing as much at night anymore its mostly when I wake up in the am like a smoker.  I coughed pretty much all day yesterday.  Is there something natural I can do or take that will sooth it?  I can't have anything with sugar in it, so honey and maple syrup are also out.  It's really annoying.

Baby starting kicking my cervix yesterday.  Such a weird feeling.

Cathy- marshmallow root tea will soothe your throat, it coats it, as honey would because of its mucilage. (it's a little slimy!) you let it steep for a while, an hour or more is good, You start to see the consistency get thick, the longer it sits, the thicker it gets. It's safe for kids, but I do not know if it is specifically safe for pregnant women. It's a very mild herb, I would would drink it for a sore throat now.

Another root for coughing is elecampane. It's a really tasting infusion, though. And I would do some googling with "elecampane" and "pregnancy" before using it.

If you have a health food or natural food store (or, heck, amazon prime) there are a lot herbal "natural cough syrups" out there. Their ingredients should be listed. Some do have honey.

Cathy, the house sounds like a great fit!  Fingers crossed for you.

I find gargling with warm salt water helps, as does a neti pot if you have any post-nasal drip.

Hi all, sorry I'm not keeping up at all right now. My DD has been in Children's hospital since Sunday with pneumonia, RSV and an ear infection to top things off :( She's on 3 kinds of steroid mask/puffer stuff, oxygen, antibiotics...just off IV fluids thankfully. It's been a rough few days...we've had a bit of improvement this morning so I'm hoping by the weekend we can get out of the hospital. I'm just home for a quick shower and food. Thinking of you all!

Carmen- Sending healing thoughts your way, and strength too.

Cathy- Another good tea for colds and sore throats is kudzu (the wickedly invasive vine taking over the South).  You can mix some into warm juice (if you can have that kind of sweet), or in with a lemon ginger tea...  And fingers crossed on the house and land too!

Carmen, I hope your little one is home and well quickly!

My 2yo has been feverish and miserable all day. Thankfully, my MW comes to me so I didn't have to miss our appointment today. It took quite a while to find baby's heartbeat but we could hear lots of movement and kicking all the while, which was definitely reassuring. I was wondering why we heard movement in so many different areas, then noticed one of the tickers on the computer that says baby is now 10" long, head to toe! Apparently 18 weeks is the first point where the limbs straighten enough to measure head-to-toe and not just crown-to-rump. Baby must've been stretching out a lot but I guess s/he has the span to do that.

I snuggled with the hot 2yo here at the computer for a while and watched some birth videos. Lots of talk about mama making noise, working hard, etc. She was SO excited to see babies come out! She told me she wanted the baby in the first one. Then she sorted out that OUR baby would come out, but we don't get THAT one.

My counselor suggested yesterday that I take epsom salt/ACV baths. I did last night and it was sooo nice. I slept amazingly much better than I have been. I'm off to do the same now. Highly recommend it. Both epsom salts and ACV are pretty much cure-alls so it's gotta be helpful for everyone, right?

Thanks Banana!!  I will look into those.  I wonder if elderberry would help and is ok for pregnancy.  That seems soothing on the throat too.

Cathy, I'm not sure this will be an antidote to dry air, but when I'm coughing at night, I mix a few drops of eucalyptus with olive oil (or whatever oil) and rub it into the bottoms of my feet, then put on socks. It really seems to help/alleviate the cough. I do it constantly in winter. Hope it helps and you feel better soon.

On Kudzu:

I was happy to find that Kudzu had some benefits!  I found the juice and Kudzu recipe in "The Natural Pregnancy Book" by Aviva Jill Romm.  I was going to link up some thing that told more about it, but every page I find says that not enough is known about Kudzu and pregnancy... So, maybe avoid it for now and go with something you can be sure about.  Sorry.

Ms Romm is a pretty big name in birthing, she knows her stuff! I bet she'd answer an email too, with more info about using kudzu in pregnancy.

Unfortunately the majority of "stuff on the Internet" is going to say that pregnancy and X don't mix, because it's all from sites like medhelp or various medical websites. When I search for stuff about herbs, it's really typical to have dig to find what actual herbalists have to say about herbs and pregnancy.

Good idea.  I put it in the humidifier too.  Anything will help.  Next year I will be more prepared.

Carmen - sending you prayers for a speedy recovery fo DD.  My sister has a medically fragile child and we dread the winters because she always ends up in the hospital.  She is just out and recovering nicely.  Hope your DD comes home soon.

HeatherB - I told my husband about your post and he is out getting me Epsom Salts right now!  I am passing on the Apple Cider Vinegar because the smell can trigger MS.  The sweetie volunteered to go and get some for me.  Thank you for giving us the idea!

We only have less than one acre but want to put in some fruit trees.  We are in Baltimore, MD and still need to research what will work in our area.  We will do some veggies also. My husband is more familiar with that because his father always grew vegetables in the yard.  Anyone of you farmer-moms have any notion of what fruits grow well in Baltimore?
