How cold is too cold to go out?

I know it's possible to go out with babies no matter how cold if you have the proper equipment, but I didn't want to spend a ton of money on things my baby will outgrow anyway in a few months so all we have is a "puffy coat" kind of bunting and a fleece bunting. He hates being worn so I usually just put him in his bunting in the stroller if we go out, but for the past few weeks it's been too cold and we've been hiding out inside, either at home or in stores.

You've answered your own question. It is possible to go out in cold weather but you have to prepare.

You can read lots about families in Scandinavian countries that take their babies out every day throughout some fairly harsh winters. There are lots of stories about infants sleeping in strollers parked outside daily.

My babies were born in the spring, so I only had a few weeks of cold weather when they were newborns. DS was born during a severe winter storm in early March. When he was about a week old we were out for long walks in below freezing weather. They were both still infants, less than a year old, when deep winter rolled around again. I didn't want to stay cooped up all winter. It isn't healthy - for them or for me. I suffer a little with SAD and I need to get outside as much as possible during the winter months. Post-partum, I was a little concerned about good mental health and the need for exercise, fresh air and daylight, and stress relief, So they spent a lot of time outside when they were older infants. To me, it was worth it to get out of the house, so we did invest in really warm snowsuits for them.

We found that other families were often very generous with that kind of stuff. We got a lot of hand-me-downs. Because winter gear is often only used for a short time, they were often gently used and in very good condition, especially the newborn stuff.

Goodwill or consignment shops are often a good source too.

As they get a little older, another good idea is to shop the end-of-season sales for next year's winter gear.

YMMV. If you are content snuggling inside with a babe and feel you don't need the exercise and change of scenery, then I wouldn't be too concerned. As you point out, it is just for a fairly short time.

PP is right.  We've taken our now six month old daughter cross country skiing and she watched her daddy race from the Ergo two weekends ago.  We were out for a few hours and it was around 30 degrees.  We had her in a normal bunting with a warm hat and a thicker onesie underneath.  I did frequent hand checks, but she was fine.  Alert and loving watching everything.  Since your babe doesn't like being worn, you'd have to check a little more frequently in the stroller since he wouldn't benefit from your body heat.

The key, as for most things, is to use your common sense.  If it feels too cold for me to be outside for a stretch, I won't take our baby.  But being outside is really great for them and most babies love it, so throw on one of those buntings and get a walk in now and then if you can!

Thanks ladies :)

We went out today, it was really sunny, no wind and just above freezing. It was nice to be able to be in the fresh air without being stressed about him getting pneumonia!

I know being outside is great for their immune system and they should be out every day but a few weeks ago it was -20 out and I was worried it would be too cold or windy.

I've heard a rule of thumb that babies should be dressed however you'd be comfortable, plus one layer. So I've always just used that as a frame of reference. If I need a shirt, and a warm sweater, and a coat hat and mittens, the baby is in the same with a onesie underneath. If it's cold enough that I won't be comfortable no matter what, I try to stay in with a very little one. But babies can handle the cold so I never stressed too much over it.

They don't get pneumonia from cold weather, they get pneumonia from viruses.

I assume you mean -20 Celsius, that's my rule of thumb as well (if it's below - including windchill, we don't go out).

The main thing I would worry about with a little one would be frostbite, especially as they are not moving, just sitting in their stroller, so if it's -20, -10, I would limit my outings to half an hour or so.
