Accidents with nearly five year old. Help!

Hi there,

My DS will be five years old next month. He PTed late. He was 3y10m by the time he got the hang of it. Even after that point, he'd have the occasional wet pants when he didn't make it to the toilet in time, perhaps once every two weeks or so.

He got better with bladder control but over the past six months we've been dealing with soiling accidents maybe twice a month. There doesn't seem to be anything medical going on that we can see. No digestive issues, no GI bugs or diarrhea. He isn't holding it in and having it leak out or anything. The usual scenario is that he'll be so intently playing that he "forgets" and has an accident.

We've talked to him about it. He knows he has to go. He said, yes, he can tell when he needs to, but he's just too busy playing. We've even done the reminder thing of asking him while he's playing if he needs to go and sometimes that's successful, but other times, not so much.

Last month he hid a pair of soiled underwear in his drawer. He knows it bothers us.

Oh and he never has any issues at school whatsoever the teachers said.

Any advice? This is getting frustrating. Today was particularly bad, twice in one day. This after weeks of everything going fine.

Has there been any big changes in the family? My oldest was 4.5 when I let her know she was going to be a big sister and she started having accidents. Then my son had them for a couple weeks before he started kindergarten, even had a couple in school. They both just stopped, I didn't do anything. Hope you get it figured out. I know its frustrating.

Thanks. Nothing really apparent. Same school and friends. We haven't moved. No new siblings (thank goodness). No new job situations for us. Everything seems to be the same. I just can't figure out WHY this is going on and more importantly, what we can do to change it.

At school there is a set schedule and everyone uses the bathroom about every 2 hours. How about setting that kind of schedule at home?

We got our daughter an alarm watch and set it to go every 2 hours (and had a lockout so she couldn't reprogram/mess with it purposely or accidentally), when she had a backslide getting "too busy" playing to pee.  It was better than us reminding her, which made her feel embarrassed - when the watch beeped/vibrated, she'd hop up and dash for the bathroom.  It wasn't cheap ($40 I think), but was well worth it.

Thanks. I think I'll give the timer system a try. We are going to the GP this week just to rule out anything I might have missed. I talked it out with DH last night and it sounds similar in some instances to encopresis. DS does have occasions of where he'll have just a small amount in his undies, and there have been two times where he pooped in his sleep. I didn't think it could be encopresis at first because his stool is not hard and he's not constipated at all, but DS admits that he does hold it in at school and so I imagine his bowel function is being affected if he consciously holds it in for hours at a time.

HAve you ever taken him to a chiropractor? We took my ODD when she was having accidents.  The chiro explained that her bladder and her brain were not communicating quickly enough.  Is he not comfortable going in public?  I know my brother and husband pretty much refuse to poop in public!!  Is there a private, clean bathroom at school?  just a thought
