Preventing biting inside of mouth when numb

My 5 year old has dental work next week.  The past 2 times he had his jaw numbed he bit the inside of his mouth terribly.  Is there anything I can put inside his mouth this time to help prevent him from chewing himself up?  I'm going to watch him like a hawk this time, but I want to be prepared.  Also, he is nervous about the dentist this time (because of the numbing) and I think having a plan of something we can put in his mouth will help him.

Anyone have a suggestion to share?

Well, we had the appointment and my son wouldn't let the dentist do the work.  Luckily, the decay is very minimal and we are going to recheck in 6 months.

If the work isn't too deep would he rather try without the numbing?  If it's a baby tooth it might not be very sensitive to begin with, so the needle might cause a lot more pain than it prevents.   Dd had a small filling done when she was five and opted to skip the needle with no regrets.  She felt a little bit, and put her hand up whenever she needed a brief pause, but it went fine, and she spent less time in the chair since there was no waiting for the numbing to happen.
