I keep looking at the Handwriting Without Tears program for my 5 year old. He can print all the capitals, but has difficulty remembering how to do some lowercase letters. He will also write some numbers backwards sometimes. I see people praising the HWT program, but I'm a bit confused about how to use it. What do I get to get started? What the heck is Mat Man, and do I need that or will it be fun for ds? Do I need the teachers guides or is the workbook pretty self explanatory? What about the blackboard with double lines ... a good idea?
I've tried to show ds how to write certain letters (like starting at the top) and he seems to do the exact opposite...like write a D for example, either starting at the bottom or making the curved part first. Writing an 8 is really hard too...he thinks it's basically a zero with a line through it. So I'd like to give him something that can be a self-directed activity, as I don't want to push him in writing, just give him the opportunity to learn how to write letters correctly.
