I heard an update to this on NPR but can't find the link, however, I found the original 2012 article and think this is pretty amazing! A map of the microbes on our bodies? Did you know that only one in ten of our cells are human? The rest are viruses, bacteria and other microorganisms. The guest mentioned that this could be a contributor to the relatively recent increase in food and other allergies.
Some quotes:
"Taking too many antibiotics, our obsession with cleanliness and even maybe the increase in babies being delivered by Caesarean section may disrupt the normal microbiome..."
"...the microbes in a pregnant woman's birth canal start to change just before she gives birth. Scientists think that's so their babies are born with just the right microbiomes they'll need to live long, healthy lives."
What do you think?
