visceral manipulation for breech babies?

Has anyone ever heard or tried visceral manipulation for flipping breech babies?

In my search for a Webster chiro, I found one that does it but also finds success with this other method. I went ahead and made an appointment but am looking for others' experiences.

Both my babies are breech, with A's butt stuck in my pelvis for the past 4+ weeks :(

What I've heard is that it's really, really, really painful!  I don't have experience with it myself though.

I'll be curious about other's responses.  My chiropractor confirmed today that baby is heads-up.  I'm only 33 weeks, but still not pleased.  She suggested that I try accupunture, as well as some of the baby spinning inversions, but not the head-stand one.  I'll go back to see her next Wednesday, and if babe is still heads-up make an appointment for accupunture and see when/if she suggests that we start the Webster stuff.

Have you already tried accupunture?

I have never heard of this. I am highly recommending some pool time if you can. I am pretty sure that is what made my babe flip to breech, but also what finally made her flip back. I was also doing the inversions, cold packs, breech tilt - so it is hard to tell exactly what it was, but after several weeks of all that stuff, she flipped within 1-2 days of me doing flips in the pool and floating around on my belly.

Berry, I think that visceral manipulation is also called "manual manipulation".  Usually, it would be performed in the hospital by an OB as there is a risk to baby in doing this procedure, so if baby goes into distress a cesarean can be performed immedietly.

Ahhhh. We call it external version at work. It is really fairly successful with a good doc. I have never heard of anyone trying it with twins though.

Thanks ladies! Sorry I didn't reply sooner, I've been busy at work and researching all my options to get these babies to flip.

I had the 'visceral manipulation' and it is NOT the external version - I definitely would have that done at the doctor's office if I were to do it. It sounds way more severe than it is - it's like a light pressure on points of your body to help release tension on the ligaments (I think that's right?) that hold your uterus to your pelvis. It's a similar idea to the Webster Technique, which works on two of these ligaments to get things aligned. So we'll see. I had a NST today and the nurse wasn't too optimistic about either flipping - with Baby A frank breech and Baby B transverse over top of him. *sigh*

I've got spinning babies and the moves saved to my computer so I can always reference, and am thinking of acupuncture and the actual Webster Technique next. I hadn't thought of the pool but that might help - my belly is so heavy and babies are so low, that maybe that would help lighten things and get them to move around.

I'm starting to feel really hopeless :(

I'm starting Webster with my chiropractor next week and acupuncture on Saturday to try to flip my breech! Also for high blood pressure. I will let you know how it goes.

Good luck Jess and PM!  I hope those babies flip for you!  The inversion from spinning babies did it for me, but I was only 33.5 weeks and only have one bean that needs room to move, not two.

So I went for my acupuncture appointment on Saturday, and they introduced me to this crazy awesome technique called moxibustion. (Forgive me if you already know about this - it's all new to me!) You take a thick stick of mugwort herb (looks like a fat incense stick), light it, and hold it next to your pinky toe, at the base of the toenail, until it becomes uncomfortably hot. Then switch sides. Do this for ten minutes every day. Supposed to flip the baby like a charm! Apparently the 34th week is the ideal time to start this - so, lucky me. They sent me home with the moxa stick. They also did "regular" acupuncture stuff with needles. Very helpful and calming. We are so lucky to have a community acupuncture clinic on my street that only charges $15 per appt. I'm going back Wednesday. I feel the baby move A LOT every time I do the moxibustion. I've been feeling hiccups exactly in the middle on the right side, so I'm thinking he is turning transverse. I feel movement as if something is reaching out both sides of my belly. I have begun to be concerned that perhaps baby is breech for a reason. My placenta is very clearly up high, anterior, and on the left. I keep thinking perhaps the cord is short or wrapped, and he is trying to flip but keeps being pulled back by the cord? Anyway, interesting thoughts . . . chiropractor on Wednesday too for Webster technique.

Yes, I've heard that Moxa can be even more effective than external version.  I hope that it works for you!  And I hope that baby is just being stubborn and not not turning for a reason!

Subscribing as Baby Girl flipped to breech sometime in the last week.  Hoping she will turn back as the doctor says I have plenty of fluid...although I'm 35 weeks tomorrow.

I'm sure DH will be quite amused with the inversions and breech tilt!

What is with our little acrobats??  I think that babe has now turned from posterior to anterior and is still bum up.  Fingers crossed he or she stays put now!

lol.gif DH hasn't caught me doing them yet, but DD is always asking "What are you doing Mommy?" when I'm doing inversions or just hands and knees at weird times. She's also started tailor sitting in imitation of me which is super cute love.gif I'm not sure what positions babies are in right now, I may get confirmation tomorrow if my OB can't find both HBs again, I'm pretty sure Baby B/Boy is head down, but not sure where Baby A/girl is as she is always flipping around!

What's with these active girls?!?  DS was always in the same position...for like the last three months.  Head down, bum out, a few random kicks.  This one is all over the place!

Went for Webster technique at the chiropractor last Wednesday. It was not painful, just a bit intense. She applied quite a bit of pressure to the areas where the ligaments of the uterus attach. She worked on my pelvis and my pubic bone a lot to get them aligned. And then just regular adjustment on top of that. I felt really sore and almost flu-like achy the next day, but it was better after that. I go back on Friday.

I have been doing moxibustion every night and getting acupuncture twice a week.

Also I started inversions today. They really make my head pound and I feel pretty dizzy when I get back upright. Anyone else have this problem?

I still haven't felt the "big flip." I go back to the midwife on Thursday. I will be 35w4d. At what point does a breech position become a really big concern?

PM, that does sound intense.  I hope baby flips for you soon!  I know that they can flip at any time, right up to the end, but as they become larger it becomes more difficult.  I did find that the inversions made my head hurt, and I was just doing the quick, 30 second ones from spinning babies, not the full breech tilt.

I have heard that people can get a bit sick feeling after the appointments because of the releasing of toxins? My chiro always says to drink a ton of water (which of course I am doing anyways, how can I drink more?!) to help.

I definitely always feel dizzy when I do those. I have heard that your body gets used to it and stops with the dizziness as much, but so far that hasn't been my experience.

I haven't felt a big flip either. For me, with two, I think I'm pretty much screwed but I'm not sure with a singleton when it becomes a concern. A coworker of mine had her baby flip at 36 weeks, and I know my acupuncturist said after 36 weeks acupuncture and moxibustion is less effective. But I think anything is possible!

I never felt a "big flip" but Baby Girl had gone back to vertex as of Monday.  I did some inversions from spinning babies and other yoga moves last week.  But as of Friday, I figured that if I never felt her flip to breech, I might not feel her flip back.  So I stopped the inversions.

Again, hoping she stays there....

My doctors weren't too concerned as they say I have plenty of fluid for her to move around.  They said they would try a manual manipulation around 37 weeks, if necessary.
