Would it ruin my washer if I just tossed 'em in there?

What's the best way to wash lots of grimy shoes?

I often toss them in with a couple old towels. I usually soak them in a tub for awhile as most of mine tend to float once put in washer

FYI mine is a top loader.

I have a front loader. I suppose that makes a difference in this case? Are the towels to reduce the noise factor?

I add the towels for the scrubbing factor

I would think a front loader would do a much better job of washing as they wouldnt get to float all the time.
