How to help 3 year old sleep without pacifier

My nearly 3 year old relies heavily on his pacifier to fall asleep at night and naptime. Due to an injury with stitches above his upper lip, there's no more pacifier (at least I got to blame it on the doctor!)

He won't nap without it unless I hold his hand for a half hour, and at night, it takes a good hour and a half to fall asleep. .. neither are reasonable options for our family's schedule (having a baby very soon, he won't sleep later in the AM to catch up for the lack of sleep, and I have to stay up past my own bedtime now to wait til I know he's asleep)

Any tricks to help an older child adjust?  He'll stay fairly calm and in bed at least, but still he's lacking sleep.  The pacifier would literally make his eyes get heavy and body go limp. I don't know if there's anything that could work a wonder like that.

Is he still allowed to bite on anything? If so, you might want to consider getting him a Vulli teether. Perhaps mouthing something soft could help
