Choroid Plexus Cysts

Hey Mamas! I am 30w5d pregnant. After my 20 week anatomical ultrasound scan, there were 2 Choroid Plexus Cysts found in my baby girls brain. I did the research about them at the time, and since there were no other findings of anything being wrong with the baby, I'm not worried about them at all. I know that they usually dissappear before the baby is even born, and even if the baby is born with them it's not abnormal. In some of the research I did, I read that 50% of adults walk around with them in their brain and don't even know it.

Reason why I started a thread about it though, is because I was given the option of going for another ultrasound around 36 weeks, so see if the CPC's are gone, and I'm debating whether or not to do it. It would be nice to know that they were gone, and everything is fine with baby, but I don't want to go and be told about something else to worry about, like baby's size or amniotic fluid levels.. as I know they're not as accurate that late in pregnancy. And I don't even know if they will check anything other than the CPC's. I guess I'm just wondering what anyone in this position has done. Have you just left it and trusted everything was fine? Or did you check to see if they were gone? Thanks for any input! I would just like to talk things through with people who have been in this situation!

I don't have any advice but just wanted to say that I found out my baby girl has a dandy walker cyst on her brain at 20 week scan as well. She also doesn't have any other abnormalities or issues and we are not really worrying about it, especially since she is def thriving in there. Good luck!

Thanks so much for replying. It's good to know how common it really is. I know my baby girl is thriving as well. I really have no worries about it. And I see the ultrasound as kind of unnecessary. But I am still on the fence about it. Like, I'll never know if the CPC's are gone, kinda thing.

Hi,

I had the same thing happen to me, around 28 weeks. (I'm 33 weeks now) I had gone to the ER because I thought I was in early labor, and they did an ultrasound to check my cervical length (which was fine, and I was not in labor), but my doc called me a couple of days later with the radiologists report from the ultrasound, and said that he had found a choroid plexus cyst on my daughters brain. Everything else was fine, just the cyst. I freaked out for a day or so, then did a bunch of research and calmed myself down. They are common, and usually not something to worry about. The radiologist recommended having an ultrasound done on the baby's brain once she is born, but my midwife recommended getting an ultrasound at 32 weeks to make sure it had disappeared. I have decided not to have the ultrasound now because I think it will cause me more worry than relief. Even if she still has it, I'm not sure what good knowing about it will do right now. We are considering having an ultrasound on her head once she's a couple of months old, if we see a need for it, but I'm ok with trusting that it will resolve itself. If I hadn't needed that emergency ultrasound, I would have never found out about it all all (I had a 20 week anomaly scan, and it wasn't there). That's the drawback of all this modern technology- they pick up things that are probably just a normal developmental thing in 90% of cases, but because research hasn't caught up with some technology, it's flagged as a potential defect, etc.

That's my story:) It was comforting to me to read that the same thing happened to you. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Thank you so much for sharing your story! It's comforting to know that you are just trusting that they will resolve itself. I didn't know that they could do an ultrasound on baby's head after they are born! That would be better I think.. If it came to that. I'm thinking we will skip the ultrasound. I totally agree with what you said about the research not being quite where the technology is. Makes total sense. smile.gif glad that this is so common. Nice to hear others stories!
